Kwenu,
A few days ago we celebrated the independence of Tanganyika. We had three enemies then, umaskini, ujinga, maradhi. Are they still a threat?
Poverty
We have sustained a relatively high economic growth lately, 6% to 7% a year. But while our poverty rate has declined, the absolute number of poor has not due to high population growth rate, 55 million in 2016.
Domestic stability has not translated into economic prosperity for Tanzania however. Many citizens live below the World Bank poverty line. 22.8% of Tanzanians are absolutely poor. (World Bank, CIA Fact File 2016)
Based on 2015 World Bank Report, Household Budget Survey of 2012:Basic need poverty which refers to the minimum resources needed for physical well being declined from 34.4% in 2006,to 28.2% by 2012.Extreme poverty also decreased from 11.7% to 9.7%.
WB senior economist "...in reality around 12 million Tanzanian people still live in poverty and more than 4 million citizens continue to live in absolute poverty. An estimated 70% live with less than $2 per day.
Literacy
According to CIA Fact Book,2015 estimates, literacy in Tanzania for individuals above 15 years,
Male 75.9%
Women 65.4%
In 2012 the average was 80%.
According to UNESCO data of 2012 ;
Male, 15-24 years 76.5%
Female, 15-24 years 72.8%
Adult literacy rate in Tanzania, 2015 was 80.4%.This was based on who can with understanding, read and write a short, simple statement on their everyday life. This also encompasses numeracy, the ability to make simple arithmetic calculations
Literacy among the youth in 2012,85.9% and in 2015 87.3%.
In 2014,the budget for education as a share of GDP was 3.5%
Health
There is a slight increase in the number of people using NHIF cards treatment but the percentage is too small. The CIA Fact Book estimates death rate among Tanzanians at 7.8 people per 1000 per year.
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention, CDC accounts the various causes of diseases by percentage as under;
HIV AIDS 17%
Lower Respiratory Infections 11%
Malaria 7%
Diarrhea Diseases 6%
Tuberculosis 5%
These above are the top causes.
CDC data further reveals that in February 2016 report,a total of 637,875 Tanzanians use ARV's to prevent new infections.Also, 74,430 expecting mothers use ARV's to prevent mother to child infections. Circumcision to avoid new HIV infections captured 1,155,833 men.
Child Mortality rate;
In 1990 the ratio was 166 deaths per 1000
In 1999 there were 99 deaths per 1000 live births.
In 2005,112 deaths per 1000
In 2015,67 deaths per every 1000 live births. At least the number is dwindling. Infant mortality decreased from 68% to 43% per 1000 live births.
Do you remember the "Kikombe cha Babu" period? 2010-2011.Many patients including HIV patients rushed to Loliondo to be cured, they stopped taking ARV's. Some of the patients escaped hospital beds.Many died and some were buried in Loliondo.Some of our political leaders joined the tour, openly and in hiding. A new route to Loliondo was established.
This was an indication of how desperate and unsure people are with regard to the health sector.
Another weakness or shortage in the health sector was during the arrival of the Chinese military hospital ship. It had all the facilities required for a top rated referral hospital. Again, people escaped even from Muhimbili, our national hospital to go and get attended to by 'Wachina'. Appointment numbers were sold at Tsh. 3,000.Not all the patients got the opportunity to be attended to because of time frame.
There are some achievements but we still have a long way to go.
Let as debate.
