When my father passed away his best friend for 50+ years sent me a photo of them both on a bridge in Zurich when they were both young university graduates traveling together for the very first time in their lives to Europe. A year after my father died, his friend’s daughter (more than a sister to me) and I met in Venice and we decided to take a train to Zurich and buy similar clothes to what they put on in year 1974 to try to pull off the same pose on Quaibrucke and remake their picture.

mid 60's...back in the day. I remember it like yesterday. Pops and I were coming from 18 holes at the golf course. We turned the corner and everyone else was playing football in the street. I couldn't wait to get out. When I did, threw my clubs down in the grass and was ready to get at it. Usually Pops would just drop me off. However, this time he got out the car and told us all to get together for a picture. Click....the rest is history. Photographed are a future medical doctor, Community leader and decorated track team founder, entrepreneurs, senior level corporate managers, great family men, and military veterans. We lost a couple along the way. However, I am so proud of them all.

At the battle of Adwa Ethiopian warriors skilled in sword fighting called Shotel destroyed the invading Italian soldiers in hand to hand combat.

The Battle of Adwa was the climactic battle of the First Italo-Ethiopian War. The Ethiopian forces defeated the Italian invading force on Sunday 1 March 1896, near the town of Adwa. The decisive victory thwarted the campaign of the Kingdom of Italy to expand its colonial empire in the Horn of Africa.

The Ethiopians surrounded the Italians for two weeks and, upon Empress Tayitu's advice, cut off the fort's water supply. The Italian commander agreed to surrender if they would be allowed to leave with their firearms. Menelik agreed that they could leave the garrison unharmed.

Meet Sabina Chebichi. Born on 13/5/1959 in Nairobi Kenya, she won her first marathon in 1973 while barefoot and wearing nothing but a petticoat. Sabina went on to become the first Kenyan female athlete to win a medal at the Commonwealth Games in 1974.

Utumwa wa Waarabu ulikuwa tayari umeanza barani Afrika zaidi ya miaka 700 kabla ya biashara ya utumwa ya Ulaya kupitia Atlantiki.

Biashara ya utumwa ilianza wakati Waarabu walipoivamia Afrika Kaskazini kwa mara ya kwanza katika karne ya 7 BK. Mara ya kwanza Waarabu kuingia Afrika ilikuwa kupitia Misri.

Jenerali wa kijeshi wa Kiarabu aitwaye Jenerali Amir Aben Alas, aliivamia Misri mnamo Desemba 639 AD. Amir alikuwa amefanikiwa kuiteka Misri na kusonga mbele na kuyateka maeneo mengine kama vile Tunisia na magharibi mwa Libya.

Mara baada ya maeneo haya kutekwa kabisa na Waarabu, waliweka ushuru wa watumwa 360 katika mikoa yote waliyoikalia na kudhibiti.

Kwa biashara hii ya utumwa ya Kiislamu barani Afrika, Waafrika Kaskazini walifanywa Uislamu na mabwana zao wa utumwa Waarabu.

Na leo, Waafrika wengi wanajifanya Waislamu bila kujua jinsi wamiliki wa dini kama hiyo walivyowatumikisha kikatili mababu zao weusi wa Kiafrika kwa zaidi ya miaka 700.

Kumbuka kwamba kila wakati unapoona Wamisri wa kisasa wanadai kuwa wa asili ya Afrika Kaskazini.
