Kenya and the United States signed the first bilateral deal following President Uhuru Kenyatta's trip to Washington, D.C. on Wednesday, January 6.

The air freight services deal was signed by Transport Cabinet Secretary James Macharia and US Assistant Secretary of State for Economic and Business Affairs Manisha Singh.

The signing of an amendment to the Bilateral Air Services Agreement will see airlines from both countries allowed to establish and operate cargo hubs in the other country.

The move is expected to drive increased trade between Kenya and the United States and develop the country's air freight services sector.

The last amendment made to the Bilateral Air Services Agreement was signed in 2019 and facilitated historic direct flights between the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) and New York.

The amendment signed by Macharia on February 6, will see restrictions on cargo operations eased in a bid to spark increased foreign direct investment in Kenya.

"Kenya and the USA have today signed an amendment to the Bilateral Air Services Agreement between the two countries. Ms. Manisha Singh, the Assistant Secretary of State for Economic and Business Affairs, signed the amendment on behalf of the USA.

"The revised Bilateral Air Services Agreement between Kenya and the USA will facilitate the expansion of air freight services, by allowing airlines from both countries to set up and operate air cargo hubs in either country," Macharia shared on social media after signing the amendment.

The deal was signed hours before President Uhuru Kenyatta was scheduled to meet his US counterpart Donald Trump to begin negotiations on a free-trade agreement between the two nations.

If signed, it will be the first free-trade agreement signed by the US with a Sub-Saharan African nation.

Addressing a governance think tank, the Atlantic Council, on Wednesday, February 5 in Washington, Uhuru stated that it was Kenya's desire to be a pacesetter for other African nations by working to build a cohesive society devoid of extremist politics to provide a stable foundation for sustainable growth.

He described the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) as 'a homegrown (Kenyan) solution for a divisive political culture that has often sparked electoral crises over the last thirty years'.

The President further spoke against Western discourse centered on a perceived scramble between the US and China for Africa's resources.

“I have noticed in the conversation in Western countries and their counterparts in Asia and the Middle East a return to competition over Africa.

"In some cases, weaponising divisions, pursuing proxy actions, and behaving like Africa is for the taking. It is not,” Uhuru warned.

This is a new frontier for KQ and a big win for Kenyan airports, keeping in mind that JKIA is the second fastest growing cargo airport in the WORLD.

Maybe major by Kenyans standards, which are very low to begin with.

But definitely not major by world standards.

Not even remotely close.

Ushamba tu.

America is a very strategic country from an economic point of view,a market based economy like Kenya has a lot to learn from America which pioneered and modernized free enterprise,in the long run, american businesses now dominate the world in form of conglomerates,we need their capital

You don't sound Tanzanian, you seem to be a bit more sophisticated, thanks.

So far Kenya Airways has completed 594 flights to and from New York since the launch of inaugural flight on October 28 last year.

Speaking during a one-year anniversary celebration in New York last year, KQ chairman Michael Joseph said at least 105,084 passengers had been flown on the route.
For 594 flights made in the year, KQ could have ferried a full 138,998 passengers on full capacity. This means the airline managed 75 per cent capacity since launch.
“Currently as we speak all our business class is fully booked on a daily basis and the economy is currently between 65 and 85 per cent full daily,” Joseph said.
KQ which had aimed a daily flight on the route but this was cut a few weeks later to five days a week, citing low demand during the winter season.
It, however, resumed daily flight in June on the Summer holiday peak especially for American tourists visiting East Africa.

"Beginning June, Kenya Airways will increase its frequency to New York from five days a week to seven days a week. This is expected to open more opportunities for travelers to take advantage of this route during this high season,” KQ said in a statement.
The non-stop flight to the US was billed as a key in Kenya’s quest to boost the arrival of American tourists as well as deepen commercial activity between the two countries that have been trading partners since Kenya’s independence in 1963.
KQ had hoped to ride on high tourist numbers from the US to increase its revenues by 10 per cent.
According to Joseph, a codeshare with Delta, all their passengers can fly from Nairobi to all the destinations without changing flights but they are seeking to expand the same this year.
KQ’s Nairobi New York Route serves 34 Africa destinations with Nigeria leading at 16.3 per cent of connecting Africa traffic with 1753 passengers.
South Africa is second at 15 per cent with 1613 passengers followed by Uganda at 14.7 per cent with 1581 passengers.
Tanzania has 11 per cent of the connecting traffic with 1259 passengers while Congo has eight per cent traffic with 856 passengers.

Kama dreamliner moja ya kenya inabeba abiria 240, inamaanisha abiria wa kutokatanzania pekee walijaza boeing 787 tano za KQ

Quite an insightful analysis.......kitaeleweka tu!!!

Why has Delta Airlines, AA never set foot in nairobi either for cargo or passangers?
Its been 1 year since JKIA was awarded direct flights. Cant these huge & monied airlines see the $$ on this route? or may be there is actually no $$ just big talk

Asante imekaa poa, bila shaka kama huyo Nyani Ngabu yuko balanced, atakuelewa.
