Ali Mufuruki's thoughts on the coming elections in Tanzania

I would like to call on all people of good will to get off the fence and get involved in transforming CCM and its leadership into a responsible and effective political leadership instrument of our country. Nation building is always tough and the work is never done even with the best of efforts and intentions.
Our generation can only contribute so much to this noble enterprise and then the next will carry on, hopefully building on what we will have left behind.
I have two visions of the future and both require the same proactive engagement by all of us.
The first view is that Magufuli emerges victorious next week and assumes the party leadership within 6 months. Magufuli has already declared his intention to turn the party upside down, rediscover its moral and philosophical foundation and grow it anew. He cannot do this alone and this is where we come in.
The other vision is where Lowassa and Co emerge victorious next week which will spell a very difficult and uncertain future for the country for a number of reasons. Chadema has lost its moral and philosophical soul, is being led by a bunch of crooked and unpatriotic individuals whose sole interest is self enrichment and escaping justice for past wrongs.
A defeated CCM will be faced with an existential threat as we have seen when long-ruling parties (Kanu, UNIP, MPC, etc) lose power, but allowing it to die and leave Chadema to rule alone for more than one term would spell an unspeakable disaster for this country and its people.
Again good people will need to roll up shirt sleeves and get involved in the party and rebuild it (or build it anew) so that it is ready to rule by the time we go for elections again in 2020.
A Chadema win is particularly troubling because of the number of risks it carries with it. Lowassa has promised Zanzibar a 3-tier government within 100 days and I think Zanzibar's understanding of the 3-tier government is not the same as that defined in the Warioba Commission report.
You all know what a unilateral and disorderly disengagement from the Union by Zanzibar will mean to peace and security in our country - may God almighty spare us this outcome, Amen.
Another risk is that posed by the possibility of Lowassa's health failing to the point where he would be unable to rule. Under the current constitution, the presidency would go to Duni Haji Duni, a mercenary party member of Chadema (founding member of CUF and fervent separatist) whose ideology is well known in political circles.
Even if Lowassa survives his term, the impact of the criminal networks that has sponsored the recent rise of Chadema may be such that our country will not recover from it for a long time or ever.
Again a focused and well-led CCM will be needed to provide direction to this country's people.
So in conclusion, whatever the election outcome next week, we should stand ready to step in and help this country to move forward.
