Josephat Kandege (MP-Kalambo, CCM)
Lawmakers are bidding the government to grant farmers maize exportation rights to neighbouring countries where apparently they may earn more.
Speaking yesterday in the National Assembly in Dodoma, MPs said it was astonishing that the government has not lifted the maize exportation bar.
Describing the indecisiveness as very unfair Josephat Simkamba Kandege (Kalambo, CCM) said that farmers invest their own capital and from nowhere the government chips in and imposes an export ban on something it never invested in.
Also the MPs are calling for a price review of the crop and derivatives thereof arguing that the current prizes are unbalanced and favour businessmen and consumers leaving out the producers.
It is high time the government worked on the price of maize as well as maize flour right now it is 1,300/- per kg and research is needed so that it is win-win situation for farmers, businessmen and the final consumer , he said.
On a different but related topic, Gaudence Kayombo (Mbinga East, CCM), asked the government to build more storage facilities in areas where maize is produced to safely stores and prevent damages that lower the products value.
Responding, Food, Agriculture and Co-operatives deputy minister Adam Malima reminded the MPs that farmers had the opportunity to export maize for a one year window but the ban will remain in place until further notice.
But reassuring the MPs and the public he added, the government has several strategies to empower Tanzanian farmers with better prices including the effective use of warehouse receipts system .
By the system, the government via regional and district commissioners bars the trend of businessmen buying crops straight from the farms at low prices.
