Anne Makinda appears now the most attractive presidential candidate for CCM after a careful analysis of a teaming list of presidential pretenders found wanting. It is true Makinda's record is incomparable to everyone else within CCM ranks before professor Anne Tibaijuka was outfoxed by the deceptions of graft eaters!
CCM path to power demands an inspirational presidential candidate free of scepters of graft but is a well established figure that can easily resonate with voters, and at least for now, Makinda aptly fits the bill.
Where gender arithmetic are casually resisted but they are part of the recipes to sell this candidate among frazzled voters. For CCM rebranding has become not only a survival tool but a necessity, as well. CCM needs a candidate whose calibrations is without an iota of graft allegations, a team builder and extraordinary sensitivity to the plight of ever-growing class of the poor in our highly stratified society in income disparities.
Makinda has, so far, moderated her presidential ambitions and has not shown an appetite to amass wealth despite a number of lucrative positions she happened to be endowed. While those leadership characters were once brandished by Ben Mkapa but we now know better that he took us to the scalpel! There are legitimate reasons to believe Makinda is no cunning Mkapa.
Mkapa had a reason to cloak himself with hypocrisy because the no nonsense Nyerere was his boss. So Mkapa nursing no nonconformist laurels had to shape in or he would have been shipped out in a manner Mr. Kambona was hounded out of office.
It is fair to presume Mkapa was a cunning politician - an acumen, Makinda had no reason to emulate given the loose morals dominating our political class. It is fair to argue Makinda is "what you see, is what you get.". She has no motivation to cloak her true character behind any form of hypocrisy.
But that amplified, we also harbour serious concerns for her candidature. While she seems to have grown in the job of the House for being tolerant to the ever vociferous opposition's dissent but she does not seem perturbed in any notable way by official graft.
Where we credit her for not dipping her delicate fingers in our Treasury but she condones and abets graft by not rebuking it! Her failure to strike out the name from MPs' register of Mr. Andrew Chenge following his three year criminal conviction is a case in hand.
Mr. "Minor Change" may have paid a token to save himself but that meant he served the three years and should not have continued pegging a tent in the House let alone writing our most polarising constitutional order to date.
Makinda pussycated to remove Escrow mandarins from chairing House committees signaling she is unlikely to seriously rein in upon official graft. During her Speaker's tenure we witnessed no laws hatched to end ever snowballing tax exemptions which now are four times the swag we squeeze from donor community. The question is:- will Makinda presidency end tax exemptions and this nation living beyond our means with such wantonly lending indiscipline?
Sadly, the answer is no! Despite the novelty of romancing a female presidential candidate, the facts are loud and defeaning that official graft will not be nipped in the bud but will blossom.
Since we know her presidential candidature is a smokescreen to deceive us the nation will gather developmental pace we know she is just another pipe dream standing no chance to confront the ghosts condemning us to endemic poverty.
As for me, I am least troubled to know that she is no agent of social change but one area I will be pleased to prod her on is to declare her marital status by just showing me, a likely voter, who is this mysterious man in her life. If she cannot fight official graft, at least she ought to be a role model where family values may root to her as its most vocal defender but not its unashamed scoffer.
