Kenyatta University has been closed indefinitely after day-long protests over exam registration turned ugly.
The students had staged a riot to demand an extension of the process.
They say the university administration closed the process before some of them had registered.
Earlier, the students had blockaded Thika Road occasioning a huge traffic snarl-up on the busy highway.
They were demanding that the administration rescinds its decision.
Police were called to the scene and as the confrontation turned violent police lobbed teargas to repel the students and force them back to campus.
The university had closed the registration process on February 7 and is adamant there will be no extension.
At least 2,000 students mostly under the self sponsored programme are affected.
A student told the Nation that even for those who paid fees past the due date the university would not change its stand.
It said the balance would be carried over to the next semester.
Some students and passersby have been injured as they scampered for safety.
