Arusha. Fastjet Tanzania starts flying between Kilimanjaro International Airport (KIA) and Entebbe in Uganda tomorrow as the budget airline cements its presence in the region's growing aviation sector.

The Dar es Salaam-based airline is deploying its Airbus A319 on the route in a move that also seeks to promote KIA as one of Tanzania's most promising international gateways, surrounded by the country's tourism hotspots of Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Manyara, Olduvai Gorge, Tarangire National Park, the Mount Kilimanjaro as well as the Arusha National Park on Mount Meru terrains.


"We will offer three flights each week – Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays – on the route," the airline's general manager Mr Jimmy Kibati said here at the weekend.


He said the decision to turn KIA into one of its bases in the country also stems from the fact that the airport is close to Arusha which is the headquarters of the East African Community (EAC).


"It is in this belief that we are also introducing flights between KIA and Mwanza starting from March 30, 2015 (today) where we will offer four weekly flights on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays," he said.


In the endeavour to meet its goal of being a truly pan-African budget airline, a number of international destinations are on the Fastjet's cards, with the Dar es Salaam-Nairobi route – which is currently a monopoly of Kenya Airways - ranking high on the agenda.


Currently, the two-year old airline operates domestic flights from Dar es Salaam to Mwanza, Kilimanjaro and Mbeya as well as to Johannesburg, Lusaka and Harare in South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe on the international scene.

SHARE PLACEMENT HELPS FASTJET TO RAISE AN ADDITIONAL 75 MILLION US DOLLARS

News from London just in confirm that Fastjet’s issue of additional shares was fully taken up and has helped to raise a further 50 million UK Pounds or about 75 million US Dollar equivalent in new capital.

It was also confirmed that Ed Winter has stepped aside as interim Chairman to concentrate on his CEO role while Mr. Clive Carver has been installed as new interim Chairman in a non-executive role.


The additional funds will mostly be channeled towards the new airline set ups in Zambia and Zimbabwe but part at least will be used to help expand the route network to Uganda and as and when approved by the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority into Kenya.


Said Ed Winter when making the announcement this morning: ‘I am delighted with the success of our Placing and with the positive reaction of investors. While our low cost airline model is already well established and highly regarded in Tanzania, this fundraising is a transformative step towards achieving fastjet’s goal of building Africa’s most successful pan-continental low-cost airline.We will now be able to significantly expand our fleet and customer base, grow our operations organically, add new international routes and expand the fastjet model in Kenya, South Africa, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe. In doing so, we look forward to bringing our safe, reliable, low cost flights to up to 210 million potential customers, 20% of Africa’s population, and to creating a new market for aviation.We have also announced a proposed share consolidation which we expect to be a positive development for investors, reducing share price volatility. To allow me to fully focus on the growth of the business, I am pleased to say that Clive Carver has taken over as interim non-executive Chairman’.


In related news was it also learned that the Fastjet fleet is expected to grow using a mix of aircraft ownership models and by the end of 2018, it is anticipated that approximately one a third of the fleet will be leased, a third equity financed, and a further third debt financed. Fastjet will also use the proceeds of yesterday’s placing to expand its existing operations and expects to further increase the frequency of flights on all its current routes, linking domestic destinations with routes such as Mwanza to Kilimanjaro, and add more international destinations such as Nairobi, Lilongwe, Mombasa and Lubumbashi to the Tanzanian network. A further opportunity includes the operation of 5th freedom flights through Entebbe, where Air Uganda has ceased operations and left a void in air connectivity.


In closing his statements did Ed Winter the add: ‘In the past two years, we have established very strong foundations in Africa and demonstrated we can manage our way through challenging regulatory restrictions, operate to a high standard of reliability and operational performance, build an award-winning and relevant brand, establish and grow effective distribution channels and trade profitably’.

Stelios to inject £5 million into Fastjet

EasyJet founder Sir Steltio Haji-Ioannou is reportedly injecting £5 million as part of a £30 million fund raising exercise by African budget carrier Fastjet.

The share placing will help provide net working capital for expansion and the acquisition of aircraft, identified as used Airbus A319s.

Sir Stelios, who has a 10.8% stake in Fastjet and remains a major shareholder in easyJet, is acquiring about 10% of new shares being issued through his easyGroup, The Times reported.

Fastjet wants to expand in Zambia, Zimbabwe, Kenya and South Africa.

"This will be sufficient to build a sizeable operation in each country," the airline said. "Building on the success of the Tanzanian operation, Fastjet plans to roll out the model across the African Continent.

"The airline has identified five countries – Kenya, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe and South Africa – as key markets for expansion of its business plan."
Fastjet operates three A319s operating from Tanzania but says it has the potential to reach a fleet of 34 aircraft by 2018.

"Fastjet's long-term strategy is to become the Continent's most successful pan-African low-cost airline," the airline said.

The airline currently has three domestic routes operating in Tanzania linking Dar es Salaam with Mwanza, Kilimanjaro and Mbeya, and four international routes from Dar es Salaam to Johannesburg, Harare, Entebbe and Lusaka.

Chief executive Ed Winter said the target over the next three and a half years is to try to capture around 1% of the population of the six countries it has chosen to operate in.

He said the fund raising was a "transformative step towards achieving Fastjet's goal of building Africa's most successful pan-continental low-cost airline."

The airline also announced that non-executive director Clive Carver has been appointed as interim non-executive chairman to lead the search for "an appropriate long-term non-executive chairman for the next stage in the company's development".

Fastjet launches new regional route

FASTJET Tanzania Airline has officially launched its newest flight between Kilimanjaro, Tanzania and Entebbe Airport.

It will offer three weekly flights on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturdays.

"Fastjet has responded to requests from Ugandans and Tanzanians asking for a direct route to connect to East Africa major centers of business, offering customers the lowest fares," Jimmy Kibati the general manager said during the press briefing at Entebbe Airport.




Tickets for Kilimanjaro-Entebbe flights have market stimulating fares as low as Sh150,000 for a one way ticket, but exclude luggage and government taxes.



"We are thrilled to expand this route network between Kilimanjaro and Entebbe, which are some of the busiest cities in East Africa. Our passengers can now access Entebbe conveniently from Kilimanjaro at very low costs," he said.



Kibati said that the launch of the route indicate the success in implementing strategy in becoming a true budget African airline.

While a total of 20 carriers operate from Dar es Salaam, the top 12 airlines command over 93% of weekly seats this December. It was 2013's #1 airline, Precision Air's 41% capacity decrease over the last 12 months that has allowed low-cost carrier fastjet to steal top-spot following its own 91% growth, meaning it has become the largest carrier operating from Dar es Salaam with a market share of 25%. The airline, which also controls over 18% of all weekly departures, operates a total of seven non-stop routes from Dar es Salaam, of which Mwanza is the most frequently flown destination, being served with thrice-daily flights. Interestingly, four of these services are international links, with the 1,072-kilometre sector to Entebbe in Uganda being the most recently new addition on 16 September. Ranking second with a weekly seat share of 12%, Emirates connects Dar es Salaam to Dubai with 12 weekly flights using a mixed fleet of its 777-200s, 777-300s as well as A330-200s.

Weekly seat capacity for this December has gone up 29% (when comparing data with the same week last year), with seven of the top dozen operators recording capacity growth, while Qatar Airways, Oman Air and EGYPTAIR saw their operations unchanged. Moreover, Emirates' LCC subsidiary – flydubai – landed for the first time at the airport with daily flights from Dubai on 16 October. Besides flydubai and Air Seychelles, Dar es Saalam has seen the arrival of Auric Air with five domestic airport pairs and Interair South Africa's twice-weekly flights from Ndola, while Air Uganda and Air Astral ceased their operations to Entebbe and Dzaoudzi respectively. Emirates, is the fastest growing carrier at Dar es Salaam, posting a net annual growth in weekly capacity of 2,356 weekly seats, coming as a result of increasing its frequency on the 3,961-kilometre sector from Dubai by five weekly flights.

Dubai is top destinations in 2014

Following an impressive triple-digit increase of 200%, Dubai is the top destination served from Dar es Salaam in 2014, accounting for a market share of 16%. The most populous city in the UAE is served by both Emirates and flydubai with a combined 19 weekly departures from Tanzania's largest and richest city. This is followed by operations to Nairobi, which has managed to climb one position when compared to data from the same week last year, as weekly capacity has grown by 692 seats or 24%. Kenya Airways managed to increase its frequency on the sector to the Kenyan capital from four times daily to five times daily. By comparison, the domestic destinations of Kilimanjaro (-6%) and Mwanza (-17%) are the only cities of the top dozen that have witnessed capacity fall this December.

Overall, the top 12 destinations represent 85% of the total market, which accounts for the same market share recorded for the corresponding week 12 months ago. Interestingly, four domestic destinations break into this year's top dozen (highlighted in bright green), namely Kilimanjaro, Mwanza, Mbeya and Zanzibar, out of which the first three are served by fastjet with a combined total of 53 weekly flights. While Dar es Salaam has seen the addition of 11 new destinations this year, it has also witnessed the withdrawal of Precision Air's services to Moroni-Hahaya in the Comoros and ZanAir's domestic operations to Pemba Island.






On 16 September, fastjet – the largest carrier at Dar es Salaam this December – launched its fourth international route, with twice-weekly flights to Entebbe in Uganda. Cutting the celebratory ribbon at the gate in Dar es Salaam are: Jean Uku, Commercial Manager Tanzania, fastjet; and Jimmy Kibati, General Manager East Africa, fastjet.

The Kenya Gazette Notice 2581 of last Friday, 17th of April, informing the general public of decision taken by the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority during their last licensing hearing, brought out some intriguing insights. It was learned that the pending application by Fastjet to set up a low cost airline in Kenya has again not been dealt with. This leaves the fate of the application mired in clouds of suspicion and allegations as the authority at a hearing last year deferred a decision on this applications. It followed objections from a number of airlines either already flying, or others which for all intent and purpose are defunct but have kept their Air Service Licenses current.


It is now all but clear that the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority has been turned into a Berlin Wall by local airlines which are intent to keep competition out of the Kenyan skies, competition which would bring the cost of air transport down considerably, going by the low end fares of US Dollars 20 per sector Fastjet charges on its Tanzanian domestic routes (Plus Taxes and Regulatory Fees).


This lack of a conclusive decision for Fastjet's Kenyan ASL however is not directly linked to the airline's Tanzanian company's application for landing rights for flights from Dar es Salaam to Nairobi. This too has been kept in the bottom drawers of the KCAA bureaucrazies, pun fully intended, for now almost a year. The lack of approval for what the Tanzanian CAA has clearly stated is a duly registered Tanzanian airline, designated for the route and meeting all criteria as far as ownership is concerned, led to a short lived and sharpish tit for tat by the TCAA when it curtailed flights by Kenyan airlines into Tanzania by nearly 60 percent, before a Head of State intervention agreed to restore air services – and in a related development also access by Tanzanian tour vehicles to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. This however is subject to a negotiated settlement of this and other contentious issues between the two EAC countries which has bedeviled bilateral relations and impacted on the tourism and aviation sectors of both countries. TCAA sources, still smarting from the arrogant treatment dished out to them at the ICAN meeting last year in Bali, when they met their Kenyan counterparts, have all but confirmed that should Kenya continue to withhold landing rights for Fastjet Tanzania, they would revert to flight bans and even carry out regular ramp checks on Kenyan registered aircraft landing in Tanzania as punitive measures. Such would then continue until as one source said verbatim but on condition of anonymity: '… our airline gets permission to fly to Nairobi no matter of the consequences. Aviation is based on reciprocity which we have not received. It is also based on us confirming ownership status and the continued questioning of our decision by the Kenyan CAA amounts to declaring us unfit to do our job. This is nothing but levelling the playing field which until now was very uneven'.


In a related development it was also learned that defunct Jetlink, which folded some years ago over the refusal by the South Sudanese Central Bank to let them repatriate over 2.5 million US Dollars' worth of ticket sales, was granted a one year renewal of their Air Service License. Jetlink had severally tried to get into the air again but has hit multiple obstacles until now and got a year left under the license renewals to make it or break it. Only one application for a variation of a license was refused while all other 22 applicants received a thumbs up. Notably was Jubba Airlines which parent company is based in Djibouti, granted a license to fly to from Nairobi to Entebbe, among other destinations. This has led to prompt questions from Uganda aviation circles how Kenya could 'stuff ‘the skies between their two countries with airlines bearing a 5Y registration while mistreating companies like RwandAir which is flying under Ugandan fifth freedom rights between Entebbe and Nairobi and was slapped with a capacity cap when flights commences at the end of January this year.


There are certainly interesting days ahead as the bilateral meeting is coming closer and the outcome will be reported here just as soon and the decisions have been taken.

Precision Air (PW, Dar-es-Salaam) has appointed a Dubai-based consultant to help it locate and attract a suitable foreign partner capable of shoring up the struggling carrier's finances. In an interview with the East African newspaper, Precision Air chairman Michael Shirima said the consultant had been enlisted after shareholder Kenya Airways (KQ, Nairobi Jomo Kenyatta) deferred a USD10million capital injection.


Though Precision Air had met conditions set down by the Kenyan carrier to qualify for the funding, it had been told to wait as Kenya Airways reportedly had to resolve other pressing internal issues before payment could be made.


Among the Kenyans' conditions included either selling off or arranging a sale/leaseback agreement on five of its aircraft (two ATR42-500s, two ATR42-600s, and five ATR72-500s), retrenching more than a fifth of its staff, outsourcing some functions, and drawing up a debt-reduction plan while improving cash flow.


In the wake of the delay, Shirima said the consultant will seek an interested company which is capable of immediately injecting between USD40million and USD75million in “any form which is not a loan. It can be shareholding, quasi-shareholding or mezzanine funding.”


“We need between USD40million and USD75million from an investor; we will spend that money to pay some of our debts and inject the other into our operations,” he said adding that the sale and leaseback of the five Avions de Transport Régional aircraft could earn the carrier an estimated USD80million.


In return for their funding, the investor will get an undisclosed shareholding in the Tanzanian domestic operator, Shirima said.


Following a failed IPO on the Dar es Salaam stock exchange in early 2012, Precision Air has struggled to contain soaring costs attributed mostly to a volatile Tanzanian Shilling and jet fuel prices. As part of cost-cutting measures, the airline has switched to an all-turboprop fleet with the bulk of its regional routes having been discontinued. The carrier ended its Moroni Int'l operations in late September leaving Nairobi Jomo Kenyatta as its only remaining international destination.

Low-cost African airline fastjet's (LON:FJET) Tanzanian operations carried one-and-a-half times as many passengers in May 2015 as they did the year before.

The airline carried 65,118 passengers on its Tanzanian routes, up 52% year-on-year. The load factor – a measurement of how full the aeroplanes were – was 70%, while punctuality remained excellent, with 94% of flights arriving on time, fastjet said.

In response to demand, fastjet has added additional flights on the Dar es Salaam to Mwanza route for the summer season, which runs from the end of July to the middle of September, while it has also tagged on an extra weekly flight linking Dar es Salaam with both Lusaka and Harare.

The additional flights mean the company will be getting more service out of its existing fleet, and it clearly has plans to expand further, as the painters are apparently brushing away, putting the company's distinctive livery on a fourth aircraft that is being reconfigured prior to joining the fleet, while discussions are taking place over adding a fifth craft.

"Once again, fastjet Tanzania has achieved considerable passenger growth year-on-year. This is particularly pleasing as we approach the busy summer period during which we have added more capacity on certain routes to meet expected demand," said Ed Winter, chief executive officer of fastjet.

(MENAFN - Gulf Times) Qatar Airways has announced network frequency increases to multiple destinations across its global network.

The national airline is adding frequencies to Dubai (the UAE), Jeddah (Saudi Arabia), Peshawar (Pakistan), Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), Belgrade (Serbia), Sofia (Bulgaria), Asmara (Eritrea), Djibouti (Djibouti), Najaf (Iraq), Luxor (Egypt), Salalah (Oman) and Zanzibar (Tanzania).

The increases in frequency will provide business and leisure travellers to and from these destinations with "more flexibility and greater choice" to connect onto Qatar Airways' global network covering Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia Pacific, North America and South America, according to a statement.

From July 16, Qatar Airways will increase its frequency on the Doha-Dubai route with one additional daily flight, taking its capacity up to 15 services a day to Dubai International Airport (DXB), which also takes the total frequency to DXB and DWC to 19 flights a day. Dubai has the highest frequency in the airline's route network and the popular Gulf destination is currently served 126 times a week.

Flights to destinations in the Middle East have also increased with an additional daily flight during Ramadan to Jeddah. From June 18, services to Jeddah have risen from double-daily to triple-daily flights.

The third daily flight to Jeddah is being operated with an all-premium first class service. The Airbus A319 aircraft is fitted with an all-first class, single-aisle, 2-2 seating configuration with 40 seats.

Qatar Airways will also strengthen its commitment to Pakistan, the statement notes. After the recent announcement to launch flights to three new destinations (Sialkot, Faisalabad and Multan), the airline is expanding further in Pakistan with Peshawar moving from three weekly flights to daily flights effective from October 1.

Kuala Lumpur, which is currently served 21 times a week, will have three additional flights from tomorrow until August 29, helping supplement busy travel demands during the summer season.

The Sofia-Belgrade linked route, which is currently served with five flights a week, will see an increase to daily flights when it adds two more flights from tomorrow.

Starting today, Qatar Airways will initially operate five weekly flights to Zanzibar via Kilimanjaro, and commencing October 1, the airline will offer an additional two weekly flights - making it a daily operation to Zanzibar. Out of the daily flights from October, passengers will be able to fly non-stop to Zanzibar three times a week and on a linked flight via Kilimanjaro four times a week.

Expansion in Africa includes one additional weekly flight to both Asmara and Djibouti from today and July 3, respectively. Service to Luxor will increase with one more weekly flight effective from November 1 to March 20, 2016.

Najaf will be operated with two additional weekly flights from July 15, taking its frequency to 10 weekly flights. From September 18, four additional weekly flights will be launched to Najaf, making it a double-daily operation.

In addition, Qatar Airways will operate three more weekly flights to Salalah from October 6.



Highlights of the frequency upgrades

Dubai (DXB & DWC): To increase from 126 flights a week to 133 (19 daily flights), from July 16

Jeddah: 14 flights a week to 21, from June 18

Peshawar: Three flights a week to daily, from October 1

Kuala Lumpur: 21 flights a week to 24, from tomorrow until August 29

Sofia-Belgrade: Five flights a week to daily, from tomorrow

Zanzibar: Five flights a week to daily, from October 1

Asmara: Three flights a week to four, from today

Djibouti: Three flights a week to four, from July 3

Luxor: Four flights a week to five, from November 1 until March 20, 2016

Najaf: Eight flights a week to 10 from July 15, and from 10 flights a week to double-daily from September 18

QATAR AIRWAYS LAUNCHES ZANZIBAR

When Qatar Airways yesterday launched the long awaited flights from Doha via Kilimanjaro to Zanzibar, closing another gap in their East African destination map, was the Spice Island's tourism trade, needless to say, smiling from ear to ear that a major global airline had finally made its maiden flight to Unguja.


Flying initially five times a week, in combination with Kilimanjaro, is this flight predominantly dedicated to the Tanzanian tourism industry, combining safaris and beach vacations.


Qatar Airways however, on occasion of the inaugural flight, brought some added good news with them when an announcement was made that come October the route would be served daily, adding yet more seats and most important, guaranteeing daily departures from any of QR's destinations around the world a one and two stop service respectively to Zanzibar. In fact will only four of the seven weekly flights then route via Kilimanjaro while the other three flights will operate nonstop out of Doha.


This will no doubt come as a huge disappointment to the Kenya coast's tourism sector, where Mombasa remains conspicuously absent from the Qatar Airways route network inspite of clear expressions of interest by the airline to fly to Kenya's Indian Ocean port city.

The arrival of QR in Zanzibar and the instant announcement of going daily within the space of four months has brought the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority back into the crosshairs of critics, who have regularly accused the regulators to be building a Chinese wall around Kenyan airspace. Having kept Tanzania's Fastjet Tanzania with grotesque allegations out of the Kenyan skies, denying them landing rights in Nairobi, as well as keeping Fastjet PLC out of Kenya altogether until now has earned the responsible staff the evil eye from the Kenyan tourism fraternity.


More than Fastjet though is the case of Qatar Airways of growing concern as clearly the age of the charters to Mombasa is coming to an end and only multiple daily scheduled flights from abroad directly to Mombasa will eventually be able to make up for the air capacity losses the destination has experience over the past years.


In a related development did Qatar Airways also announce the addition of one extra flight per week from Doha to Asmara and to Djibouti, commencing this week already.

Around 350 aviation professionals were gathered in Bahrain to witness the presentation of the awards and to take part in this year's Routes Middle East & Africa – the inaugural route development event for all aviation based companies who wish to conduct business to, from and within the region.
The annual Routes Marketing Awards are highly regarded as the most prestigious awards in the industry as they are voted for and judged by the airline network planning community. They provide the airline community with the chance to have their say, regarding the airport or tourism authority they think has provided the best overall services to them relating to route development and marketing over the past year, to establish new or maintain and develop existing routes.

While Dubai International Airport was announced as the overall winner of the Middle East & Africa heat of the 2015 Routes Marketing Awards, winners also included Kilimanjaro International Airport and Zimbabwe Tourism Authority, with Cape Town International Airport being ‘highly commended.'

The shortlisted finalists were nominated by airline network planners; a respected panel of judges, comprising senior members of the airline network planning community from the region, reviewed the lists and submissions from the nominated airports in order to determine the winners. The panel consisted of the following judges:

Dubai International Airport joins Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, Tourism Australia and Brussels Airport, recently announced as overall winners of the Americas, Asia and European heats respectively.

KIA WINS ROUTES MIDDLE EAST & AFRICA AIRPORT MARKETING AWARD FOR THE THREE YEARS IN A ROW


On the 1st June, 2015 in Manama, the Kingdom of Bahrain. Kilimanjaro International Airport (KIA) was announced as the winner of Routes Middle East & Africa Airport Marketing Award for under four million passengers category. KIA has won this award for three years in a row.

Fastjet to raise up to 19.2 million pounds through share issue

African budget airline Fastjet Plc (FJET.L) said it would raise up to 19.2 million pounds through a share issue.

The carrier said it would issue the shares at 50 pence each, a premium of 116 percent to the stock's Wednesday close.

Fastjet shares jumped nearly 57 percent to 35.9 pence at 1245 London time on Thursday on the London Stock Exchange.

The airline also said its new Chief Executive Nico Bezuidenhout would start a business review when he joins the carrier in August.

Ed Winter stepped down as Fastjet's CEO in March, under pressure from the company's second-largest shareholder, Stelios Haji-Ioannou. Haji-Ioannou has also called for the dismissal of Fastjet Chairman Colin Child.

The carrier, which is facing tough conditions in its home market of Tanzania, said it intended to break even on cash flow by the end of 2017.

Fastjet expects to report a trading loss for 2016.
