Ninadhani hili litakua ni fundisho kubwa kwa wakenya kutegemea chakula cha kununua badala ya kuzalisha chakula ndani ya nchi. Tukiwaambia wanasema wanapesa ya kununua hakuna umuhimu wa kuzalisha chakula ndani ya nchi, sasa wakenya pamoja na pesa zao, wao ndio wanalazimika kuhatarisha maisha yao kwa kupambana na mamba ili kufuata chakula, kwanini wenye chakula wasifuate pesa badala yake wenye pesa ndio wanafuata chakula?. Kenyans are swimming in the crocodile infested rivers to go to the neighboring countries and search for food after the borders were closed.
Kenyans who are in Kenya, Uganda border are swimming across River Malaba after the Malaba border point was closed. They go to the neighboring Uganda country to look for fruits, vegetables and grains which are now scarce on the Kenya side after the border was closed.
Fruit and vegetable retailers hire boda boda riders to cross and buy vegetables, fruits and cassava.
Asked by this writer if they did not fear the crocodiles in the river they swim, one vegetable vendor said that he better get attacked by the wild animals than watch his children starve to death.
"I better get attacked by the crocodiles than stay at home and die of hunger," he said
The traders said that the job was even more risky when the river is flooded after heavy rains in Mount Elgon where the river originates.
Polycarp Emee, 22, said life was slowly becoming harder after the closure of the border.
“Life was easy before because we went to Uganda any time, buy our goods and come back to Kenya,” he said.
He said he did not cross into the country but facilitated the movement of fruits with the help of a neighbour who is in Uganda. Doing business across the country has been made harder after President Uhuru Kenyatta ordered a dusk to dawn curfew in order to help the spread of coronavirus.
