Tanzania to open first-ever embassy in Israel
African nation which severed ties with Israel in 1973 to establish first embassy in Jewish State next week near Tel Aviv.
Tanzania announced Tuesday that it will open its first embassy in Israel, Yisrael Hayom reported.
Tanzanian Foreign Minister Dr. Augustine Mahiga will attend the opening of the embassy on May 8. The new embassy located at 12 Abba Hillel Silver Street in Ramat Gan, near Tel Aviv
The east African nation of Tanzania has never opened an embassy in Israel before. Tanzania severed diplomatic relations with Israel in 1973 following the Yom Kippur War. Relations between the two nations were reestablished in 1995, However, Israeli contacts with Tanzania have been conducted solely through Nairobi in Kenya.
Dr. Mahiga will be the first Tanzanian Foreign Minister to visit Israel.
Tanzania appointed its first Ambassador to Israel, Job Daudi Masima, only last year. Prior to Masima's appointment Tanzania was represented in Israel by Honorary Consul Kasbian Nuriel Chirich.
The opening of the first Tanzanian embassy in Israel comes days before the opening of the new US embassy in Israel's capital of Jerusalem on May 14, and the opening of the
Guatemalan embassy in Jerusalem.

Mwijage Encourages Israelis to Invest in Tanzania
By Alfred Zacharia
Dar es Salaam — Minister for Trade, Industries and Investment Charles Mwijage has called on investors to consider venturing into pharmaceutical industries.

Mr Mwijage told the Israel Business delegation yesterday when he was officiating the Tanzania-Israel Business and Investment Forum (TIBIF) in Dar es Salaam.

"If you real need to invest in Tanzania today, then the pharmaceutical industry is the right sector and the government will provide full support," he noted.

The minister, however, said there are several other sectors the investors may invest, but stressed that fifth phase government has a special focus on pharmaceutical industries in order to cut imports.

"Investing on pharmaceutical and medical industries is a good idea now because the market is there. Tanzania has a population of more than 54 million people who need medical equipment and drugs," he said,

He added that the investors will also be able to access the East African Community (EAC) and South African Development Community (SADC) markets as well as some neighbouring countries, which are landlocked.

Moreover, Mr Mwijage disclosed that Tanzania is currently exporting more to Israel than what the county imports from the Middle East country.

"Israel has vast areas of desert and they import more food items from Tanzania," he said.

He however, noted that, the volume of export to Israel is still very low and the exported items are in form of raw materials.

For her part, the Israel minister for Justice, Ms Ayelet Shaked promised to invest in the sector, harbouring hopes that advanced technologies from her country would revolutionise the sector.

"Considering the technologies available in Israel, I believe the Israelis will be interested to come and invest in pharmaceutical industries here, thanks to our friendship and conducive environment for investment," she said.

In Summary
  • Arkia lacks a plane to deploy on the Nairobi route, which it stopped plying in 2003.
  • The promise to restart direct flights was made in July last year when Israeli premier Benjamin Netanyahu visited Kenya.
  • Tel Aviv had also pegged the resuming of flights to Nairobi on Kenya beefing up security and upgrading surveillance at major airports.

Israeli airline Arkia will take longer to begin direct flights to Nairobi because the carrier lacks a plane to deploy on the route it stopped plying in 2003.

The Israeli embassy in Nairobi said that direct flights between Nairobi and Tel Aviv, initially set to begin in August 2016, may mean Arkia closing one of its routes in order to fly to Kenya.

“This is still in the pipeline…it’s just a question of when. Arkia being a company with a small fleet needs to check which route they would sacrifice to sample out the Kenya route,” said Israeli ambassador to Kenya Yahel Vilan in an interview. Arkia Israel Airlines has a fleet of seven aircraft which fly to 30 destinations, mostly in Europe.

Arkia’s twin destinations in Africa are Kilimanjaro and Zanzibar in Tanzania. The promise to restart direct flights was made in July last year when Israeli premier Benjamin Netanyahu visited Kenya.

Tel Aviv had also pegged the resuming of flights to Nairobi on Kenya beefing up security and upgrading surveillance at major airports.

Direct flights between Israel and Kenya were stopped following a November 2002 terrorist attack on an Arkia plane with 261 passengers onboard, shortly after taking off from Moi International Airport, Mombasa.

The attack was not successful. On the same day however, suspected Al-Qaeda suicide bombers attacked the Israeli-owned Paradise hotel in Kikambala, Kilifi county, killing about 15 people.

Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and Moi airport have since undergone major upgrades to boost security screening for passengers and cargo.

MY TAKE

I read that

El Al brings in tourists to kick off Tanzania services

GOING TO NGORONGORO: Starting April there will be one flight a week between Tel Aviv and Kilimanjaro International.

EL AL Israel Airlines gave the Tanzanian tourism industry a fantastic Christmas and New Year’s present in mid-December when they flew in tourists from Tel Aviv, to Kilimanjaro International Airport.

There were more than 150 visitors on board the flight. The tourists from different backgrounds included 10 disabled people, and journalists from various Israeli mainstream media outlets such as Israel Today, Latest News, TV Channel II, TV Channel 10 and National Geographic.

Speaking to East African Business Week in Arusha, Ms. Ronit Hershkovitz, Managing Director of the Menelik Safari Company who coordinated the trip said the flights from Israel to Kilimanjaro will continue this year. The flight takes about five hours.

Starting from April 2014, El Al will be running four flights each month (once a week) in April, May, June, July, August, September and December between Tel-Aviv and Kilimanjaro. These are expected to bring more than 6000 tourists from Jerusalem every year.

The demand for passenger seats has been growing fast to service the lucrative Kilimanjaro route as the destination continues to attract new visitors to its world class attractions scattered all over Tanzania’s northern zone. The region has become a popular choice for conference organizers.

The route will offer Israeli visitors a one-stop service solution and give a big shot to the Tanzania travel and tourism sectors with the numbers of visitors expected to rise in the short term.

Ms. Ronit who also toured the Tanzania tourism wonderlands with the visiting tourists was optimistic that many Israelis will choose to come to Tanzania because of its authentic tourism products and services.

“I am extremely satisfied and I am sure all Israelis back home will be happy to come and see what I saw!” she told East African Business Week.

Besides flying tourists from the Holy Land, Ms. Ronit hinted that El Al intends to pick up Tanzanians or East African travellers heading for pilgrimages to Jerusalem.

“We have been experiencing a number of Tanzanians, as well as East Africans who travel to the Holy Land for pilgrimage. This is also a niche market for our direct flights,” she said.

Tanzania’s tourism industry contributes nearly 17% of GDP, far more than the minerals sector, which however is also set to increase in the near future.

On the sidelines of the launch, Willy Lyimo, Arusha Branch Manager for the Tanzania Tourist Board said for long periods, visitors who come into the country mostly came from the United States, the United Kingdom and other European countries hence the breakthrough in the Middle East was extremely important to the growing local tourism industry.

The tourists from Israel stayed in Tanzania for two weeks, with the handicapped persons taking the challenge of scaling the 5895 metre Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest peak on the continent,.

Geoffrey Tengeneza, the Principal Public Relations Officer with the Tanzania Tourist Board (TTB). said the rest of the group visited Ngorongoro Crater, Serengeti National Park and Lake Manyara.

Lyimo spoke enthusiastically about the new developments, including the potential benefits in which the new route offers with numerous socio-economic benefits (revenues accrued through hotel’s services, car hire, curio shops and so on), arising from tourist’s businesses in Tanzania.

The Tanzanian northern zone boasts of Kilimanjaro, the highest freestanding mountain in Africa, the Serengeti plains and Ngorongoro both command a big number of visitors, as well as Arusha, Tarangire, Lake Manyara and Mkomazi parks. This includes the wealth of cultural insight and heritage in Tanzania’s prominent tribes, and the huge Arusha International Conference Centre (AICC) based in Arusha.

Apart from the tourism industry Tanzania northern zone also has precious mineral resources (including Tanzanite, which is found nowhere else in the world), thousands of livestock, a robust horticulture industry that adds, value to the quality of life of the people and revenues in the Tanzania national cake.

Lyimo explained that there are clear key indicators, to be realized, such as: increase of flight frequencies, flexibility for travellers (broaden traveller’s choice), reduce the average travel and transition time, helping to market the route’s attractions, connect with park’s air crafts at ease, spur growth of businesses among East Africa’s member states, increase competitiveness which will point to lower tariffs and improved services.

He underscored the importance that El Al , which is Israel’s national carrier, will provide especially linking travellers from the Middle East and other new markets that the Tanzania Tourist Board is trying to reach out to popularize the destination. Lyimo is hopeful about the growth of the tourism industry and he sees the entry of El Al as an indication that the Tanzania tourism is primed to benefit from global tourism travellers from major tourist markets around the world.
