Age is just a number to Zlatan! AC Milan star Ibrahimovic becomes the OLDEST scorer in Serie A history with strike against Udinese... and the 41-year-old reveals desire to 'continue' at top level if he can stay 'in good shape'

Zlatan Ibrahimovic became the oldest goalscorer in Serie A history when he stepped up to take a penalty for AC Milan in their 3-1 defeat at the hands of Udinese on Saturday night.

The Swedish striker, aged 41 years and 166 days, is 141 days older than the previous record-holder, Alessandro Costacurta, but he wanted no part in the honour when informed about his newly-venerated status after the match.

'He can keep the record, I don't want this record!' joked Ibrahimovic in his post-match interview with Sky Sport Italia.

The record was broken when Ibrahimovic stepped up to the spot to re-take a penalty given for handball after his first attempt was ruled out for encroachment.

After taking a different approach, Ibrahimovic found the back of the net to score for the first time since returning from prolonged injury.

The Swede has scored in each of the last four decades at clubs such as Malmo, Ajax, Juventus, Inter Milan, Barcelona, Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain and LA Galaxy, as well as Milan.

Famous for his third-person declarations, the forward has more than justified his vocal self-confidence – such as once stating that he could play 'in the 11 positions, because a good players can play anywhere' – by scoring over 570 career goals, with more than 500 of those coming at club level.

Now in his third spell at the Milanese club, Ibrahimovic has struggled for fitness after since helping his club win the Scudetto at the end of the 2021/22 season.

Undergoing anterior cruciate ligament surgery in the summer, Ibrahimovic only returned the squad in February.

But after starting Saturday evening's tie as Milan's oldest captain, Ibrahimovic was more focused on a disappointing result that his singular achievement.

'I am proud to be in the history of this club, because it is a great club with great history, players who did amazing things, and having my name in there means a lot to me.

'This goal did not bring points, which is what I wanted. I was also proud to be captain, but the game didn't go the way we wanted,' Ibrahimovic added.

'I felt very good on the field, I hadn't started a match in 14 months and the important thing is to be in good shape. If I feel as good as I did today, I can still play, I have no doubts about myself.'

When asked how much longer he would want to continue playing for Milan, ahead of his 42nd birthday in October, Ibrahimovic demurred.

'If I am in good shape, I want to continue,' the striker said.

'Those who retire and felt fit tend to have regrets. I suffered so much in those 14 months, this is my chance to make up for that and get back into the sport.

'I am happy at Milan, it depends on them and what they want, but I have no problems here.'

Currently fourth in Serie A, Milan were drawn against table-topping Napoli in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

Due to his late return to the squad, Ibrahimovic cannot be registered for the fixture, but stated that his way of helping his team-mates prepare would ahead of the tie.

'All I can do now is prepare my colleagues in the best way in training, stay close to them and do what I can' he added.

'I have faith in this team, they will do well against Napoli.'
