While South Africa issues Visa-free travel to Sadc countries, including our beloved LDC, they have been resistant to change their policy for other African countries.

However, despite what Geza and his multiple handles have been saying, Kenya and South Africa have been working on a special deal.

It has been announced today. It's not Visa-free, but it's a start.

Kenyan businessmen and students/academia will now be issued with a multiple entry visa valid for 10 years.
Initially this was 30 or 90 days.

Frequent travellers will now receive a multiple entry visa valid for 3 years.

All this takes effect on December 1, 2018.

Remember, even with Tanzania getting Visa free access, they are too poor to travel.

Kenyans, who have been struggling to get SA visas, with majority of them denied, are almost tied with Tanzania in tourist numbers going to SA.

huwa najiuliza watu wanakimbia SA kufanya nini....hii nchi ni dangerous sana...with high crime rate, high murder rate (only rivaled by some latin american countries like honduras), one of the highest HIV prevalence rates in the world,Xenopohobia, racism...but I guess this is a good start for our businessmen and students.licha ya hayo yote, kuna pesa nyingi sana kule.

They have issues but it's still Africa's closest thing to a European/developed country.
South Africans have the spending power, and if Kenyan businessmen can take advantage, we can help tilt the trade imbalance.
At least recently they lifted the Kenyan avocado ban.

true...we need to tilt that trade imbalance though...we import a lot from these people only for them to refuse our exports...

With the right policies and just a bit of effort it would be very easy. Since we don't import from them so many high value things like cars and electronics.
Since we buy their apples and oranges, I'm sure we can also find fruits they don't grow well and export to them.

yes...we can definitely do it

U still pay the visa!

U still pay the visa!

Lol. Only if its more than 30 days.

But still, I've never encountered any Kenyan whose reason they didn't travel was failing to raise the Visa fees.
With all the traveling expenses, Visa fees are negligible.

U still pay the visa!
Sasa pole pole utaanza kuhamisha magoli...2014 ukasema SGR hamna, 2010 ukasema Bagamoyo by 2018 itakuwa complete tena bila aibu...see who's having the last laugh.

Halafu tukiwasemea shombo mnaanzisha nyuzi za kudai moderator wa Kikenya

Kenya is the only future of Africa. I am glad Kenya is racing towards outdoing S.A even though its going to be a long term thing.

Even for one day u as a Kenyan u pay! The visa free is for governmental officials. Stop lying!

Msubiri tu you have few more years on the naughty step. Na hivi mnashindwa to curb illegal migrants, itachukuwa muda kidogo.

Mr. know it all.
There is no Visa fee for ALL Kenyans visiting South Africa for less than 30 days. This has always been the case and is NOT even part of this new deal.
The only amount paid is the facilitation/service fee to VFS Global, the company running the system.

And stop confusing 'Visa-free' and 'Free visa'.

Visa-free means you don't require a visa. (Government officials)
Free visa means you require a visa, but you don't pay for it. (All Kenyans)

🙂🙂🙂 I can't remember an argument you didn't lose.

Enda usome from the horses mouth. Bongolala wewe.

SHORT TERM VISA
In South Africa, visas for tourism and for visiting family and friends are issued for a maximum of three months. Short term visit visas do not allow the applicant to switch into a longer term South African immigration service and although short term study is permitted, an applicant may not study for longer than the grant of their visa. Where students wish to continue studying in South African for longer than three months a study visa/permit application must be submitted. Unlike a visit visa, a student visa/permit allows the candidate to engage in limited employment, however in both cases permits are issued for temporary residence and candidates must return to their country of residency upon expiry.

Kenyan business people and students travelling to South Africa will now be issued with multiple entry visas valid for up to 10 years.

Frequent travellers will be eligible for three-year multiple entry visa, effective December 1, 2018.

The country agreed to ease visa application rules and entry conditions for the above categories following deliberations between Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i and South Africa Home Affairs Minister Malusi Gigaba in Pretoria on Monday.

Government officials travelling on official business to South Africa will be granted three months free visa immediately.

Currently, Africans visiting Kenya for less than 30 days do not require Kenyan visa.

Those intending to stay longer are issued with visa on arrival at the point of entry or through the online e-visa platform.

With Kenya Airways already doing an average of three non-stop flights from the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) to South Africa daily, the new arrangement is expected to enhance people-to-people contact and unlock the two countries’ tourism and business potential.

Kenya’s proposal of issuance of study visa based on the duration of studies and renewal on application when need arises was also granted, a win for Kenyans studying in South Africa.

Technical officers from both countries were tasked with finding ways of reducing travel restrictions, with a view of completely removing short term (180 days) and transit visa requirements for nationals from the two countries with ordinary passports.
The technical teams have three months to complete their assignment.

The two countries have also agreed to step up joint efforts in combating illegal immigration and also protect the integrity of each other’s travel documents.

This move also comes as Kenya’s immigration department steps up efforts to streamline immigration services through automation of systems, digitization of records, and establishment of the e-passport system.

The governments are also in consultation on the strategies to mitigate transnational crimes, especially human trafficking and smuggling emanating from elsewhere on the continent and beyond.

The agreement reflects the doctrine of reciprocity after Kenya set up a more responsive and straightforward online application process for short-term visa for visitors from all African countries, a move that President Uhuru Kenyatta envisioned would foster Pan-African brotherhood and fraternity.

Discussions with South Africa on visa restrictions have been ongoing and have seen both Uhuru and his South African counterpart Cyril Ramaphosa discuss the issue extensively.

Matiang’i was accompanied by Immigration PS Gordon Kihalangwa and Kenya’s High Commissioner to South Africa Jean Kamau.

Visa to South Africa may be granted for visits to family or friends and also for tourism, business, spouse to join a spouse who is in South Africa on a work or study visa, children to join parents who are in South Africa on work or study visa and study purposes.

The visa are also issued for charitable or voluntary activities, research, conferences, to work in the production of a movie or show (i.e. in the entertainment industry), medical purposes, when a patient needs to receive life saving treatment for three months and sport events.

How much do they charge to think and understand simple things in Bongolala? Because you clearly can't afford.

Where did I mention Kenyans travel visa-free?
