The President received the document from the Task Force team on Tuesday afternoon. Present were ODM leader Raila Odinga and Deputy President William Ruto.

A brief tweet from the State House read: “President Uhuru Kenyatta today at State House, Nairobi received the Building Bridges Initiative report from the initiative's task force led by their Chairman Senator Yusuf Haji. Present were Deputy President Dr. William Ruto and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga".

The President will tomorrow present the report to Kenyans at the Bomas of Kenya, Nairobi. Kenyans are expected to read it and give their views.

Already Jubilee and ODM legislators have invited selected people to attend the launch.

The ODM party was even compelled to cancel the launch of its party headquarters in view of this development.

“Due to the State event on the BBI scheduled for tomorrow (Tuesday) at State House, Nairobi, our scheduled event to inaugurate the new headquarters and launch digital membership registration has been pushed to Thursday. Invited guests are reminded to carry their cards to the event,” the party said yesterday.

BBI at a glance

After the March 2018 rapprochement between Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Odinga better known as the Handshake, the President and the ODM leader announced their plan to bury the rivalry through the formation Building Bridges Initiative.

On May 31, 2018, Uhuru gazetted the members of the Task Force which comprised 14 members.

They were: Political scientist Adams Oloo, Agnes Kavindu, Senator Amos Wako, Florence Omose, Saeed Mwanguni, James Matundura, Major (rtd) John Seii, Bishop Lawi Imathiu, Maison Leshomo, Senator Mohamed Yusuf Haji, Morompi ole Ronkai, Bishop Peter Njenga, Rose Moseu, and Archbishop Zecheus Okoth.

What is Punguza Mizigo bill all about?

Punguza Mizigo is a Kiswahili word which means Reduce Burden.

Punguza Mizigo bill was drafted by Thirdway alliance party through its party leader Dr. Ekuru Aukot, who has in-depth knowledge on constitutional matters.

The bill seeks to reduce the number of political leaders or representatives in parliament and government expenditure in general.

The most contentious matter is that It wants the number of MPs reduced from 416 to 147 by abolishing all constituencies in Kenya. More details available in the attached pdf below.

Who funds Punguza Mizigo Bill
Punguza Mizigo constitutional amendment bill is largely funded by Third Way Alliance Kenya Party. Its party leader Ekuro Aukot noted that there are also other well wishers who do fund the initiative.

Summary of Punguza Mizigo constitutional amendment bill
The bills seeks to:

• Reduces parliamentary expenditures in Kenya from KES 36.8 billion to KES 5 billion per year

• Reduce the number of MPS from 416 to 147
Do away with constituencies and have 94 mps elected from each county (47 women and 47 men)

• Abolish MCA and senate nominations
The president to serve for one term of 7 years

• Abolish position of deputy governor
