According to oxford reference science encompasses the systematic study of the structure and behavior of the physical and natural world through observation and experiment, and technology is the application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes.
Science and technology bases on leading the national development and to support socio-economic needs. Science and technology in Tanzania describes development and trends in higher education and science, technology and innovation policy and governance in the United Republic of Tanzania since the turn of the century.
Tanzania established the commission of Technology (COSTECH) The Tanzania Commission for Science and Technology is a corporate was established in 1986 by the Act of Parliament as a successor to the Tanzania National Scientific Research council. Its responsibility is to coordinate and promote research and Technology development activities in the country.
The government vowed to promote science and technology and innovation as a way of spearheading national development. The state has also declared to keep on supporting young scientists to develop their careers for the sustainable growth.
Science and technology have been used in various contexts or particularly in all aspects, construction , extraction, preserving and utilizing natural resources.
For instance, COSTECH has called on universities to widen the role of building climate change research capacities in order to enable the society to manage the climate change.
Science and technology in Tanzania has played a vital role in development on every aspect, and this is due to globalization where the world is seen as a global village.
In education, science and technology has developed from analog to digital where as before technology the results where displayed on boards, registration was conducted through papers where students had to que to the registration office, and the applicability of materials where all in hard copy.
But due to the advancing of science technology results have been posted online, registration can be done online, and materials are all found on internet. The innovation of science and technology have been a big role in education especially during the pandemic students from all levels from primary to universities where able to study through online classes, classes where conducted through zoom or skype meetings.
Science and technology enabled easy trading activities from across the world, through various sites such as Alibaba,Kikuu,Ebay and Amazon. Entrepreneurs are able to advertise their business all across the world. Trade has been conducted online and payments have been made online, this smoothens business activities and alow the government to incurr revenue.
Changing in Science and technology have increased production, a good example is in the agricultural sector. The use of improved seeds, manure, fertilizer, tractors and irrigation system have contributed to the high productivity.
The use of technology in planting upto harvesting has easens the work of workers compare to the old local methods that were used in cultivation and harvesting,the output was not guaranteed to be high due to lack of proper tools. The use of technological have increased the production without altering the quality of products.
The change in science and technology has increased employment opportunity where job seekers can either employ themselves or are able to dind employment on their finger tip. Employment inside and outside Tanzania have been displayed on the internet where job seekers are able to find employment easily than before the coming of technology. And others are able to display their products on internet and sell them online.
Science and technology has increased the freedom of speech where through internet an individual is able to express his or her views on various matters concerning politics, social life even economical views. This has enabled the government to be able to know citizens views through their posts and tweets. The government are able to know what their citizens are thinking on matters concerning their daily life.
Changing in science and technology has influenced collaboration between countries,this is due tothe use of science and technology in proper communication and friendly trading opportunities this will encourage two countries to improve their relationship and hence avoid any outbreak of conflicts among countries.
Science and technology has influenced constructions of infrastructures that are able to facilitate easy transport system and other factors.
For instance the construction of Stiglers gorge inorder to increase distribution of electricity throughout the country, Also the construction of flyovers will influence proper movement of locomotives and reduction of traffic jams.
Although the changing of science and technology has created vast improvement and development in all sectors both social, economical and political but it has bring out massive degradation of Tanzanian culture. Technology has made especially youth to go against their cultural tradition and taboo's and follow the western culture,this has caused the deteriorating of Tanzanian culture since it is not practised at a high rate anymore, even The practice of native language is no longer practiced. As the generations to come the native language will be on extinction.
Inspite of the erosion of Tanzanian Tradition the government has emphasized on the use of Swahili language and local tourism in order to emphasize Tanzanians to be aware of what it's comprised with. Domestic tourism influence the increase in government revenue and also the it helps in providing and arising the sense of belongingness to individuals. The government should also encourage individuals to be aware of their culture so as to avoid culture deterioration.
I suggest that families should be influenced to abide with their good traditions and customs in spite of the technology which have introduced new ways of life. Each family should make sure their family are aware of their background.
This will influence culture reservation and sense of belongingness to Tanzanians and on the other hand encouraging tourism hence increasing government revenue.
