Police here are holding two Nyalwela villagers in Mbeya District for allegedly hacking to death a police corporal, Renatus John (50) who was on duty at the Katavi National Park in Makete District, Iringa Region last Tuesday
Mbeya Regional Police Commander, Mr Zelothe Stephen said yesterday that the two villagers Nyamba Ndosi and Petrol Ndefeti, aged 19 and 20 years old respectively, were arrested the same day, following an intensive manhunt mounted by police in collaboration with wananchi.
During the manhunt, the suspects were found in possession of a sub-machine gun previously used by the allegedly killed policeman. Mr Stephen said the late John who was a driver was on that material day on duty together with the Tanzania National Parks (TANAPA) game scouts who during the killing had gone inside the national park to arrest pastoralists whose cattle and other livestock were grazing in the national park.
He said after arresting the pastoralists, the TANAPA game scouts could no longer reach the police driver through his cellular phone. The deceased was later found hacked to death by sharp objects and the SMG he had been having was missing. The village government and the police in concert immediately launched a manhunt for the suspects.
Mr Stephen said it was during the search that the two men were arrested while in possession of the SMG property of TANAPA. The two were also found with 28 rounds of ammunition and a handset that was said to belong to the deceased. The suspects would soon appear before the court to answer murder charges, Mr Stephen said.
