On Saturday, October 12, 2024, the “Youth Climate Adaptation Lighthouse Event” was held at Dar es Salaam hosted by Climate Hub Tanzania in collaboration with the Global Centre on Adaptation (GCA), Green Health and the Green Africa Youth Organization (GAYO).
The event aimed to harness the potential and creativity of young people to develop and implement climate adaptation solutions, integrating them into local, national, and global climate action agendas.
The Youth Climate Adaptation Action Day set a bold target to engage one million young people across more than 100 countries, positioning itself as a vital platform for raising awareness, sharing innovative solutions and driving collective action on climate adaptation.
This session facilitated active participation, providing a space for young people to voice their ideas and work together on practical climate solutions that address urgent environmental challenges. Participants engaged in breakout sessions focused on critical topics such as policy engagement, practical solutions and infrastructure development.
These sessions fostered meaningful discussions on advancing climate adaptation efforts across Africa and equipped youth with the tools needed to influence policy and advocate for sustainable infrastructure development. This gathering created an environment where participants could exchange ideas, learn from experts and collaborate on solutions aimed at mitigating the adverse impacts of climate change.
The inspiration to youth based on to take action and lead climate initiatives within their local communities. They were also introduced to various policies and international agreements that guide climate adaptation efforts, such as the Paris Agreement.
The Youth Climate Adaptation Lighthouse Event emphasized the importance of youth-led initiatives and empowered young people to contribute meaningfully to their communities' resilience. With experts in attendance, including representatives from GCA, Green Health and GAYO, the young participants were able to gain guidance and inspiration from accomplished leaders in the climate adaptation space.
These leaders shared insights into policy making processes and the implementation of practical climate solutions, emphasizing the role of youth in driving transformative change.
During the session, young participants shared their experiences, highlighting the challenges they face in advocating for climate adaptation in their communities.
They discussed barriers such as limited access to climate education, political interference and the lack of resources needed to implement effective climate adaptation solutions.
Furthermore, participants noted that young people often encounter cultural resistance when proposing innovative environmental policies with some communities being hesitant to embrace change.
Despite these challenges, the participants expressed optimism and a strong commitment to continue advocating for climate adaptation initiatives. Highlighted the significance of youth organizations and collaborations in bridging the gap between policy making and community needs.
The Youth Climate Adaptation Lighthouse Event proved to be a significant step in empowering young people to champion climate adaptation efforts in Tanzania and beyond. Climate Hub Tanzania, along with its partners, remains dedicated to nurturing a new generation of climate leaders who will promote transparency, accountability and resilience in addressing the climate crisis in Tanzania.
