CORD Coalition vs IEBC: Team of lawyers prepare for battle

NAIROBI; KENYA: The Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) has named a battery of top lawyers who will seek to overturn Uhuru Kenyatta's victory at the Supreme Court. They face an equally determined adversary.

George Oraro

A soft spoken and politically shy lawyer Oraro is the man behind the actual drafting of the petition. He is known to keep of political sideshows in his cases only dealing with facts and the law.

It's this strategy that saw him win the case for ODM luminary Henry Kosgey before the International Criminal Court in 2011. The court acquitted Mr Kosgey at the Pre-trial stage without committing him to trial. Oraro is renowned for handling complex and high profile commercial and even criminal cases.

Mutula Kilonzo
Currently the Makueni County Senator-elect, he was the MP for Mbooni in the last parliament. Mutula, a first-class law degree holder from Dar es Salaam is one of the greatest legal minds in Kenya. He built his legal career by taking big cases from the government during the Kanu regime.

Amos Wako
He is the immediate Attorney General and now the Busia County senator elect. Wako served as AG for more than 20 years and before then he was heavily involved in human rights campaigns.

James Orengo

He is currently the Siaya County Senator elect and the immediate former Ugenya MP. He is still serving as Lands Minister.
Orengo has a long career in politics and the struggle for reforms that put him on a collision course with the Kanu regime since 1990s. In 2002 Orengo was also a presidential candidate.

Ababu Namwamba
Namwamba is Sports Minister and Bundalangi MP elect. He recaptured the seat which he first won in 2007. Before joining politics Namwamba served in private legal practice. He is presently one of the most active defenders of Raila and Cord Alliance.

Ochieng Oduor
Also one of the prominent lawyers in Kenya Ochieng Oduor is involved in commercial as well as constitutional matters.

Paul Nyamodi
Paul Nyamodi is one of the lawyers in a pool that has been representing the IEBC in various petitions. He is involved in civil litigation.

Kamau Karori
Karori was admitted as an Advocate in 1996. He is a partner at Iseme, Kamau & Maema Advocates in Charge of the Litigation Department. Karori has been involved in various high profile commercial disputes and is one of the lawyers who work occasionally for the IEBC. He is a member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and a Certified Public Secretary

Ahmednassir Abdulahi
Presently a commissioner with the Judicial Service Commission (JSC), Ahmednassir is one of the prominent lawyers in Kenya. He is famous for openly speaking his mind and for political controversies. He is a partner in Ahmednassir and Company Advocates.

Mohamed Nyaoga
Nyaoga is the managing partner of Mohamed Mungai Advocates the law firm he co-owns with Attorney General Githu Muigai.
Nyaoga has also been involved in various high profile commercial and criminal cases as well as constitutional matters

Nani Mungai
He is also one of the top lawyers contracted by the IEBC to handle its legal work especially court matters and petitions. He is a senior partner in MMC Africa Advocates. He is a member of the International Commission of Jurists (ICC) Kenya.

Aurelio Rebelo
A seasoned lawyer and politician. He is the CEO of his firm Aurelio Rebelo Advocates. Rebelo has been involved in many criminal and civil matters. Politically he contested the Westlands Constituency seat in 2007 but did not make it.

we await the arguments and the decision of the Court. sometimes big names proves to be failures, big guns in law usually their fall is big as well, no wonder the CORD coalition being represented by such high a high profile of Big guns in the legal profession may turn to be a disadvantageous move , i have seen so many high profile teams lose their cases and this can not be the first and the last , my prediction is that IEBC team will win this battle ...i stand to be corrected by the Supreme Courts verdict...

You are right in your opinion,that " You stand to be corrected by the Supreme court Verdict.. apart from that You are wrong. I think the CORD legal Brains is smart indeed. You can review their concerns raised in the petition..are they factual? or political driven? Lets wait. By the way You can read the opinions by another legal guru Prof Makau Mutua, What is Odinga,
No one is giving credit to multi billion miserably failed system by IEBC.. ! subiri uone kivumbi pale mahakamani. Ile si uwanja ya watoto wadogo wanaotukuza U-Mt Kenya...

I will not step onto the minefield of prediction business so I'll just have to wait and see.

But people should lay off dumping on Raila just because he went to court.

What did they want him to do? Mobilize his troops and take it to the streets?

It's about time people start giving him the respect he deserves.

But for him perhaps Kenya wouldn't be where it is today - new constitution, reformed judiciary, etc.

History and posterity will judge him favorably. That's what I think.

But then again nikabaki najiuliza kuhusu kabila lake.....hivi atakuwa Mluo yule eeh?

Manake kama ulivyosema, yeye huyo Oswago ana communication skills nzuri zaidi ya Bw. Hassan.

It was painful to watch the chairman up their on their podium. Communicating is just not his strong suit.
