CORD MPs are apparently mystified by the decision by their leader Raila Odinga to continue rallies across the country. The campaign, especially the threat of demonstrations on Saba Saba, has incensed the Jubilee government to the point where it may crack down on legitimate opposition.

The MPs, some very close confidants of Raila, told the Star yesterday that they have no idea of Raila's end game but will keep supporting him for fear of victimization.

Other MPs from ODM coalition partners Wiper and Ford Kenya have been skipping the rallies or have criticised the former Prime Minister for raising tension countrywide by holding the rallies.

"We do not know what we hoping to achieve with these rallies. We are supposed to be loyal so we are showing up at these events and demanding for dialogue," said an MP known to be close to Raila.

Raila, the Cord candidate in last year's election, has called for nationwide rallies over security failings, corruption and rising living costs. His latest rally was in Eldoret yesterday. Raila has insisted that he will continue the rallies that he began on May 31 when he returned from a three months stay in the United States.

"We have no idea what Raila will do if the government does not give in to his demands for dialogue by July 7," said another MP from Nyanza.

Yesterday Raila addressed a large Cord rally in Eldoret town where he repeated his demands for national dialogue. GSU personnel were deployed to maintain security but there were no incidents during the visit.

Raila declared that the Saba Saba rally in Nairobi would go on if the government does not engage in dialogue with the opposition. Raila listed insecurity, corruption, tribalism, disbandment of the IEBC and implementation of the TJRC report as the main problems that need to be addressed through dialogue.

“They have always promised to take action but nothing has been done. That shows they have been unable to take care of the security of Kenyans,” Raila told yesterday's rally.

“While the government is paying Anglo Leasing, criminals have hidden more than Sh16 Billion in Swiss bank accounts," said Raila.

He said the IEBC should be disbanded that so that a fair and transparent body can handle elections.“We must have a fair referee to avoid problems that affected other countries like the Ivory Coast because of a bad electoral system,” said the Cord leader.

Raila said the TJRC report should be implemented to resolve historical problems.

Co-principal Moses Wetang'ula said CORD was not interested in overthrowing the government but wanted to defeat President Uhuru Kenyatta and Deputy President William Ruto in the next elections.

Wetangula said the government was intimidating the opposition with claims of hate speech.

“Saba Saba is almost here and we have asked them that we put dialogue on the table but they are delaying,” said Wetang'ula.

He said that it would be the mother of all rallies at Uhuru Park on the July 7 if the government does not engage in dialogue with Cord. Others present included Otieno Kajwang, Johnstone Muthama, James Orengo, Junet Muhammed and Jakoyo Midiwo among others. Local Cord leaders Kipkorir Menjo and Jackson Kibor also attended.

And they are calling themselves leaders, admitting to be following blindly without agenda, ironically, they are the ones who were elected and not him.....
