As Health Minister Mutahi Kagwe announced a record 168 new Covid 19 infections in 24 hours, new information on the number of ICU beds available per county has left Kenyans despondent with the future seeming even bleaker. The number of beds seem not to include the extra 1000 beds acquired by the government as was announced by Health Minister a few months ago
The Presidential Announcement on the extension of the Restriction Orders was accompanied by expected figures of Covid patients as modelled by experts. The hundreds of thousands of expected infections have brought the state of the health sector under a microscopic lense with the number of isolation beds per county especially worrying. The President announced that the Counties of Busia and Siaya have a cumulative 44 isolation beds with a 99% occupancy rate
These isolation beds, however, only hold the Covid affected patients with mild symptoms. Adversely affected patients require fully equipped ICU beds that come with ventilators and a whole team of medical experts. The country has a coubtable number of these. It was revealed in March that 60% of the ICU beds in the country are in Prvate hospitals that charge upwards of Ksh 300,000 in deposit before one is admitted

As the data reveals, 26 of the 47 counties do not have a single ICU bed and would have to depend on neighbouring counties to save the lives of their county people. This is despite Health being a devolved function for over 5 years. While the numbers for Uasin Gishu seem impressive, it should be noted that the county hosts Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital.

MY TAKE: Kumbe ndio sababu wanataka kuwaruhusu wagonjwa warudi majumbani mwao kwa kisingizio kwamba hawaambukizi tena. Kenya GDP yenu inafanya kazi gani kama nchi nzima vitanda vya ICU ni 218 pekee?. Hahahaha, Hahahaha.
