COVID-19 kills four Kenyan health workers, infections at maternity hospital rise

NAIROBI (Reuters) - COVID-19 has killed four Kenyan health workers and infected 450, the health ministry said on Wednesday, as word emerged of a slew of cases in Kenya’s biggest maternity hospital.

“Health workers handling patients with confirmed or suspected cases of coronavirus disease face an increased risk of exposure to the virus,” Rashid Aman, the chief administrative secretary at the ministry of health, told a news briefing.

At least 41 of the staff at Pumwani maternity hospital in the capital Nairobi have been infected, said Patrick Amoth, the acting director general of health at the health ministry, adding that the cases were mild.

“Nobody has gone to hospital for care, and we are hopeful that they will be able to pull through without developing any symptoms of COVID,” Amoth told the private Citizen TV on Tuesday.

Nairobi-based Doreen Lugaliki, who worked at a different Nairobi hospital, became Kenya’s first doctor to die of the virus last week.
There was no immediate comment from the doctors and nurses unions.

Coronavirus is there and it's killing,in the Region and Tanzania at large, the divisionary approach taken by President Magufuli is making things worse, he has opened schools, bars and even disco places, everything is going normally in Tanzania. In a world hard hit by a deadly virus", Lissu said.

Lissu has also accused Magufuli of thinking that the novel COVID-19 will disappear in the country if he does not release COVID-19 updates like other countries.

Mr Lissu is not the only politician in Tanzania to give Magufuli a dress down on how he has managed the COVID-19 situation in the country.

Few days ago the country's opposition led by Mbowe had also criticized Magufuli's way of handling COVID-19 pandemic and accused President Magufuli of being in a state of denial.

Tanzanian President Magufuli has attracted praise and criticism in equal measures since COVID-19 was first declared in Tanzania due to his different approach of handling the pandemic.

Magufuli first ruled out declaring lockdown in the region because he acknowledged that their economy would be affected if he declared a lockdown like other country and he advised his people to continue attending religious gatherings such as church because that was where the cure for COVID-19 was.

Magufuli also elicited mixed reactions across the globe when he threw cold water on some COVID-19 testing equipments donated to the country and revealed that some of the equipment were faulty.

Magufuli has declared the country to be COVID-19 free a fact that is raising concern in other neighbouring countries that are still enforcing COVID-19 containment measures such as curfew and movement restrictions.

Magufuli has reopened all schools in the country and other religious gatherings with no COVID-19 containment measure being practiced by the Tanzanians.

Magufuli yesterday also caused public reactions in the East Africa region after he held a luncheon in Dodoma where there was no social distance and wearing of masks causing people to question the real COVID-19 situation in Tanzania.

Many people are still waiting to see how COVID-19 situation in Tanzania will unfold in the coming days.
