The Ministry of Health has raised concern over the high rate of COVID-19 transmission among men as the number of infections in the country continue to rise.
In the daily briefing on the country’s COVID-19 status, Health CS Mutahi Kagwe on Tuesday said 133 new cases had been confirmed after testing of 3,255 samples, raising the total number of cases recorded in Kenya so far to 3,860.
CS Kagwe noted that out of the 133 new cases recorded over the last 24 hours, 88 of them were male and 45 female.
The Health CS pointed out that more men than women are getting infected with the coronavirus due to the varying behaviour among the two genders. He urged men to emulate women by being more careful and consistent in their approach to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We need to understand why so many men are getting this virus. If we were able to drop the number of men to the level of number of women you can see we’d drop the numbers substantially,” said Kagwe.
“And I think it is to do with behaviour. Women essentially are exhibiting a more careful and consistent approach to this disease than men. we as men must adopt the same attitude.”
Out of the 133 new cases, Nairobi recorded 86 cases, Mombasa (27), Kiambu (7) and Busia (5). Murang’a, Kilifi, Kajiado, Kilifi and Migori recorded two cases each while Machakos and Murang’a had one case each.
In Nairobi, majority of the cases were in Westlands (13), followed by Embakasi (10), Makandara (9), Langata (8), Embakasi East (5), Roysambu (5), Starehe (4) followed by others.
In Mombasa the distribution of cases were as follows: Mvita (16), Kisauni (6) and Nyali (3).
CS Kagwe further announced that 40 more patients had been discharged after recovering from the disease, bringing the number of recoveries to 1,326.
At the same time, one more patient has succumbed to COVID-19 raising the number of fatalities to 105.
So far the country has tested 121,956 samples
