The Civic United Front (CUF) is set to stage a three-day demonstration to protest against the ongoing Constituent Assembly (CA) sessions in Dodoma.

The demonstration, which will be held in Dar es Salaam and Dodoma is a continuation of the steps being taken by the CUF and other opposition parties forming the Coalition of People's Constitution (Ukawa).

On April, 16 this year, CA members from the political parties forming Ukawa walked out of the Katiba Assembly, alleging that the ruling party, CCM, supporters were pressing for the discussion of issues that were not included in the Draft Constitution.

Yesterday, CUF organised members' convocation to deliberate on the way forward after the CA ignored their claims and went on to discuss Katiba issues.

The convocation was opened by the CUF's vice chairman, Juma Duni Haji, who presided over the convocation up to when the resolutions were passed.

While reading the resolutions before party members after hearing their views, the party's election officer, Abdulrahman Lugone, said majority members suggested staging the demonstration for three days in Dodoma Region.

"We will organise demonstrations during working days in order to send a strong message to the people that public opinions should act as the basis for the Katiba making process," said the party leader in the convocation which was held at the party headquarters at Buguruni in Dar es Salaam.

He reiterated that another demonstration would be organised in Dar es Salaam, stressing it will be concluded at the Parliament mini offices in the city.

"We ask workers and the general public opposing the ongoing Katiba sessions to support us by taking part in the demonstration," he said.

Mr Lugone urged other political parties forming Ukawa to postpone their activities during the demonstration to give their followers chance to participate in the demo.

The leader said the demonstration will be coordinated by the party's headquarters, noting that its members will be notified of the specific dates.

The convocation was held under the supervision of about 25 police officers who parked three vehicles outside the fence of the party buildings starting from 11am to 13.30pm.

In the event, Mr Haji said the CA chairman, Samwel Sitta, displayed serious weaknesses in leading the Assembly, saying Mr Sitta does not qualify to become the country's President despite rumours that he was among the aspirants in the forthcoming general election.

Commenting on the proposed three government system, Mr Haji said the perspective could not be opposed by anybody because it reflected opinions from wananchi.

"It should be remembered that Judge Nyalali's Commission once proposed the same structure, Kisanga's commission as well and the Constitutional Review Commission led by Judge Joseph Warioba proposed a three government system…why should CCM reject public opinion?," questioned Mr Haji.

Mlaleo, with all due respect this forum (JF Palace) is specifically for those who are in need of English content and don't understand Swahili content. I think you are the one who is to go the other forum.

@ Neiwa I don't think a demo will do any good. They walked out of the House and yet the government didn't move a muscle, they held countrywide rallies after the walk out, still nothing, so how will a demo make any difference?

Thank you Neiwa

I hold the same thought. It has reached a point where it does not really matter anymore. Time will tell.
