Mr. Alstrup
Alstrup's wife was also shot and badly wounded during the incident, but is expected to survive. Efforts by The Citizen to have the police comment on the death proved futile but the Danish embassy in Dar es Salaam confirmed the incident although it declined to give more details.
"The Danish embassy can confirm that a Danish citizen has been killed in Tanzania, and that next of kin have been notified. The embassy cannot comment further on individual consular cases," the embassy said in an email reply to The Citizen.
The Dar es Salaam Special Police Zone boss Suleiman Kova said he wasn't aware of the incident and directed this paper to contact Ilala and Kindondoni police but no details were forthcoming up to the time we went to press.
Kinondoni police boss Camilius Wambura hasn't picked our phone for the past one week. Ilala police boss said he wasn't aware of the incident.
The crime reportedly took place last week, and it is still unclear whether the police have made any arrests.
The Dane lived in Tanzania and considered the country his second home. At the time of his death, Alstrup worked for the University of Copenhagen.
He has published a number of books on lichenology.
