TANZANIA assured South Sudan leaders that its support to ending the conflict in the world's newest state will not just stop at hosting the intra-SPLM dialogue, but also assist in the proposed peace process and reforms in Juba.

Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) National Chairman, President Jakaya Kikwete lauded efforts by the South Sudanese parties to end the conflict in their country, through unifying the two split factions of the Sudan People's Liberation Movement.

CCM hosted the Intra-SPLM dialogue whose talks had been taking place in Arusha since October 12, with second rounds of the talks scheduled for November.

"This will spare the people of South Sudan from enduring more sufferings brought about by civil wars that have been tearing the new country apart," stated President Kikwete, pointing out that this was a welcome move at the time when peace in the Great Lakes region was of paramount concern.

The first phase of the dialogue climaxed with the framework signing ceremony, which took place at the Ngurdoto Mountain Lodge in Meru District here last evening, being attended by the South Sudan President Salva Kiir Mayardiit and his former vice-president, Mr Riek Machar Teny.

Others in attendance were the head of the detained leaders, Mr Pagan Amum Okiech, who admitted that South Sudan had lost direction due to SPLM conflicts, while both Peter Adwok Nyaba of SPLM-In-Opposition and Daniel Awet Akot of SPLM-in-Government praised the coordination and moral support of CCM, which helped to bring the two parties together in Arusha.

For the whole of last week, between October 12 and 18, delegations from the SPLM family had been assembling in Arusha, where they had been deeply engaged in an intra-SPLM dialogue aimed at uniting the two factions of the split political party.

The Sudanese party factions have now signed agreement on establishing a framework for the SPLM dialogues, including shared principles, objectives and agenda for engaging in the talks.

The process was convened by President Kikwete at the request of the South Sudan movements' leaders who wanted to bring together all SPLM fighting groups.

"CCM, which is Tanzania's ruling party, undertook the task of coordinating and hosting the South Sudan talks in Arusha, with the aim of re-uniting SPLM leadership and the People of South-Sudan," explained the party's Secretary General, Mr Abdulrahman Kinana earlier on.

"The initial phase of the SS dialogue was held in frank, honest and cordial manner and after its conclusion the CCM Chairman, Comrade Jakaya Kikwete has invited the principal leaders of SPLM, Comrades, Salva Kiir, the South Sudan President and Riek Machara for the official launching of the process in Arusha," stated Mr Kinana.

As a result of the South Sudanese Civil War in 2013-2014, the SPLM party split and factionalised into the SPLM-Juba, led by President Salva Kiir and the SPLM-IO (in opposition), being helmed by Mr Machar.
