Two daredevils have broken the record for the world’s highest BASE jump, by leaping off the world’s tallest building.

Seasoned BASE jumpers Omar Al Hegelan and Nasser Al Neyadi reached speeds of 220km/h as they plunged 672m in 90 seconds from Dubai’s newly opened Burj Khalifa tower, gulfnews.com reported.

Al Niyadi, who has completed 2700 jumps and holds a world record for the first ever Mt. Everest sky dive, described the feat as "the best experience ever".

"When we were at the top of the building I was thinking 'this is crazy'. I was a little nervous but I wanted to jump from the highest tower in the world to record an achievement for my family and for my country," he told gulfnews.com.

BASE jumping is a highly dangerous sport involving jumping from a fixed surface and free falling before deploying a parachute.

The Burj Khalifa is 828m tall and cost $1.5 billion to build, it was opened on January 5 with an elaborate fireworks display.
