We all know about intelligence quotient(IQ) and how is measured, and that people often rely on some tests to approve certain group of individuals as they have high IQ.
But recently in our country there has been a lots going on about politics which seems to be more dynamic in recent years. To start with in Dodoma, the headquarters of our government functions and parliament, they were nominations in July for the ruling party CCM and in the end one candidate fell short of his ambitions to be the next nominee to stand as presidential candidate for the ruling party during the next general elections in coming October this year.
This is Edward Lowasa the man who appeared to have his name removed before even it was put throng for scrutiny in the NEC of CCM. But Mr Lowasa sat down to leak his wounds quietly as he planned for his next move.
In less than two weeks Mr Lowassa was welcomed in CHADEMA and UKAWA after he announced his defection earlier on as their new member. Later on he was announced as their presidential candidate and he will now stand for presidential race with Duni Haji on October 25.
While all these events are unleashed other leaders somewhere as the likes of president himself were busy with foreign trips, Seif Sharif Hamad was busy in Zanzibar but quietly dealing with Duni haji, CCM propaganda machine was halted to the ground, the media was occupied with Mr Lowasa with his activities but cautiously writing about few CCM aspirant Dr John Pombe Magufuli who was also going round the country introducing himself with his vice president to be mama Salma Suluhu.
Today we as the public who seem to get fed new patchy information everyday from different media outlets, have new information coming out about Mr Ibrahim Lipumba resigning from CUF party which has majority in Zanzibar Archipelago. Mr Lipumba has not explained in detail regarding his resignation but probably will in near future.
While I'm one of the listeners and viewers of our Tanzanian media empire I also started to remember something which I learned sometime ago during my special works with different people. Its the difference between Emotional Intelligence -EQ and Intelligence Quotient-IQ when you are about to make some important decisions which could impact not only yourself but the entire group surrounding you or community.
I started to think whether these two aspects cab be applied to our leaders and which leader has more capability of using EQ and not IQ and how he has managed successful to use EQ to get where they are today.
Emotional intelligence is the ability to use both your emotions and knowledge and experience. EQ competences include but are not limited to empathy, intuition, creativity, flexibility, resilient, coping, stress management, leadership, integrity, authenticity, interpersonal skills and intra-personal skills.
IQ is the measure of cognitive abilities, such as the ability to learn or understand or to deal with new situations- is the skilled use of reason, the ability to apply knowledge to manipulate your environment or display mental acuteness, logic and analytical skills.
To be more specific I will illustrate in the table below to be more clear to emphasize my point.

I will go further down with more example to show clearly how two people one with IQ differ from the one with EQ.
Peter has high IQ. He can reason, is analytical and logical and has a strong focus on task completion. He learns new things quickly. However he ignores how both himself and others are feeling. If things don't go the way he expects them to he quickly losses his temper and lashes out at others.
He finds it difficult to relate to people who aren't as smart as him and lacks empathy. This limits his ability to be effective in team situation even though his IQ is very high.
Joseph has high EQ. He gets along well with people and can manage his own emotions. This makes him highly effective in his work, even though there are others in the department with higher IQs.
Joseph is able to consider the emotional side of interactions, using both his cognitive abilities and his understanding of emotions. He is able to influence and motivate people because he understands what matters to them and is an excellent communicator.
His authenticity and integrity make him a natural leader. he is both flexible and creative when faced with a challenge and resilient in the face of temporary defeats. He is well liked and respected by his colleagues.
Emotional Intelligence in Leadership
When you think of a perfect leader what comes to mind?
You might picture someone who never lets his temper get out of control, no matter what problems he's facing. You might think of someone who has the complete trust of his staff, always speaks kindly, listens to his team, is easy to talk to and always make careful informed decisions.
These are qualities of someone with a high degree of intelligence.
For leaders having emotional intelligence is essential for success. After all who is more likely to succeed- a leader who shouts at his team when he's under stress, or a leader who stay in control and calmly assesses the situation?
In our political leader I can see Edward Lowasa, Freeman Mbowe ,Dr Wilbroad Slaa and James Mbatia who have qualified as leaders who have emotional intelligence. I'm still assessing Mr Ibrahim Lipumba, Seif Sharif Hamad and Haji Duni.
But if we have leaders who can't distinguish between film stars, music artists and important issues facing our countries right now like the theft of USD 413,000 worth of Elephant tasks which means between 40 -50 elephants had been killed prior to departure of 8 hauls only to be stopped at Zurich airport, I can not see emotional intelligence in them.
I can only see their IQ with some them holding PHD qualifications and still seems to do something different. Perhaps, its the time now has arrived to we electorate to start looking at these two important aspects.
If we see the difference and looks at the leaders I have mentioned, I can not understand how we shouldn't elect Chadema na UKAWA on 25 October.
Tanzanians will have real chance after more than 50 years of CCM rule to change the tide and rebuild our beloved country which now is total disarray.
