Renowned comedian Erick Omondi was on Friday sentenced to one month in prison or a fine of Ksh.10,000 for holding an unlawful assembly.
The ruling was made by Magistrate Lukas Onyina, who found Omondi and his co-accused persons guilty of not having the requisite permissions for their assembly at Parliament premises.
They argued that their intentions were rooted in the concern for the high cost of living that has been a growing issue in the country.
Reacting to the verdict, Omondi took to social networking site Instagram to write: "So today the courts have sentenced me and these young guys to one month in prison. We have been sentenced for fighting the high cost of living.
It is also weird that the government increased fuel prices yesterday and these weirdly coincided with our court date, which is for the same fight we have been sentenced. I am ready to serve that one month...I know tomorrow we will be victorious.”
