Arailway line connecting landlocked Ethiopia and Djibouti has officially started commercial operations with a colorful ceremony held in Addis Ababa.
The Ethiopia-Djibouti railway line was officially inaugurated in 2016 but was set to undergo final touches before commercial operations begin.

It links Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Ababa, to the Red Sea port of Djibouti – a stretch of more than 750km (466 miles).

Travelling at 120km/h, the new service cuts the journey time down from three days by road to about 12 hours.

The $4bn project was built with the help of funding from a Chinese bank and will have Chinese staff. Construction was carried out by China Railway Group and China Civil Engineering Construction.

Tan Jian, Chinese Ambassador to Ethiopia, noted that the Ethiopia-Djibouti railway line would contribute to the industrialization and diversification of the Ethiopian economy, and also towards the country’s growth and transformation plan.

“It is the first trans-boundary and longest electrified railway on the African continent. We, the Chinese, see this as earlier harvest project of the Belt and Road initiative. It is regarded by many as a lifeline project for both countries, for Ethiopia and for Djibouti. And we see this as a railway of development; as a railway of cooperation; and as a railway of friendship,” he said.

The Ethiopia-Djibouti railway line is the first step in a vast 5,000km-long network of rail which Ethiopia hopes to build by 2020, connecting it to Kenya, Sudan and South Sudan

MY TAKE
Ethiopia, Djibouti, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi n Tanzania have all chosen electrified SGR! Guess who is the loser in this region. Wahenga walisema "don't work up a donkey on its last kicks"!

Anyway as for your take Geza it is only Kenya and Ethiopia that have an existing and functioning mordern SGR. It is only Ethiopia and djolinouti that have an electrified rail, the rest of the countries in the region DO NOT! Until the day you can show us pictures and videos of a train moving on electricity in your soil, you should remain quiet

duh, wamechelewa sanaaa😱 miaka miwili baada ya kukamilika na yetu ilichana mbuga tokea mwaka jana.respect Kenyaaaaa baba yao

Halafu Kenya inanunua umeme kutoka Ethiopia na Uganda. Wakitaka SGR ya umeme itabidi wajipange kweli kweli.

Only Ethiopia has modern sgr in the region, ingine ni gari moshi, over

Sasa hapo nani acheke mwenzie

Uganda they're still within their capacity wakitaka wataongeza. Ethiopia wana 6000MW on the pipeline from their new dam, plus walizo nazo hivi sasa. Tanzania Kenyerizi gas power plant still underconstruction, hiyo ni 1000MW adding to current production. Bado hatujaweka Mchuchuma coal plant 600MW. And Magufuli signature project Stiegler Gorge dam 2100MW. You can't produce too much than the one you need at that particular time itakuwa upotevu wa pesa.

Wenzako wanazungumza kilicho mezani.

Hata mkiongeza 1000MW bado mtakua hamfikii kenya.

Hivi Kenya bado wana ndoto za kuihudumia Ethiopia from their ports?
Hahaa ss tuna mpaka mkubwa na uhabeshi so hilo linatendeka hata leo hii, ndoto hizo ni za mchoma kuku maguuu![emoji3] [emoji122] [emoji191] [emoji125]

Tanzania ina plan ya kufika 10,000MW by 2025.
