The European Union's ambassador to Kenya, Stafano Dejak, has said the bloc will find a way of agreeing the terms of trade with Kenya if other East African nations fail to sign the Economic Partnership Agreements (EPAs) deal by January.

The deadline for signing by East African Community (EAC) countries was initially set for October 1 but was moved to January.

Only Kenya and Rwanda have signed the EPAs deal that grants the region some privileges to export horticultural products to the European Union without customs charges.

But under a deal signed in 2001 and renewed in 2011, all EAC countries have to sign to enjoy the benefits.

haters endeleeni kutuombea mabaya, the eu will now know their true friends in east africa ,ole wako if you play tough guy with global economic powers,

Sawa hatuangalii future kama kawaida but

The Net is closing in, Ugandan and the rest they starting to look the other way, Tanzania doesn't want anything to do with Kenya. Ethiopia is quickly cementing its way in Djibouti, Somalia want to change sea boarder.

NAIROBI, Kenya, Sept 28 – The journey towards the realization of the two thirds gender principle in political representation received a major boost when the European Union Missions in the country and Gender Cabinet Secretary Sicily Kariuki unveiled a partnership to promote women and youth participation in elective politics.

European Union Ambassador to Kenya Stefano Dejak said the partnership attaches the greatest value to the critical roles that youth and women can play as agents of progress and change.

“Women and girl continue to face discrimination and violence and are – more often than not – largely under-represented in decision-making process. In Kenya the needs for a fairer gender balance, gender equality and effective women empowerment are recognised and enshrined in the Constitution. EU Diplomatic Missions to Kenya will continue supporting the Kenyan government’s efforts to meet the constitutional requirement of the 2/3 gender rule. Like Kenya we believe gender equality and tackling gender empowerment should be at the heart of all our development efforts,” the EU envoy affirmed.

Speaking after the meeting, Kariuki said she had written to both Houses of Parliament reiterating the government’s commitment to oversee the full implementation of the Constitutional provision.

“Some of the important key features of the strategy to note: In the short-term goal, it aims to double the number of the current elected women members in the National Assembly, double the current number of elected women MCAs and at least 5 elected Senators and 3 Governors for the 2017 elections,” the CS asserted.

The strategy also seeks to work with the different bodies that support women in Kenya and other stakeholders to encourage and mobilise more women to get into the political arena and compete with men for single member constituency seats.

The government has started rehabilitating Mau and Embobut forests, where thousands of squatters were evicted

The European Union has given the government Sh3.6 billion to help in conservation of five key water towers.

Project coordinator Erik Herbers said the water towers include Cherangany, Mau, Mt Elgon and Embobut forests.

Herbers and Trans Nzoia county secretary for Fred Wakofula said communities and civil society groups will be involved in the conservation efforts.

Herbers spoke when he visited Trans Nzoia yesterday.

The EU official said they intend to work with 11 counties, most of them in the Rift Valley, which borders the key water towers.

“We hope this programme will be useful in helping Kenya achieve its Vision 2030 objectives, especially touching on environmental conservation,” Herbers said.

The counties include Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, West Pokot, Bungoma, Nandi, Kericho, Bomet and Nakuru.

Trans Nzoia Environment executive Maurice Lokwalima said the region is already experiencing the effects of environmental degradation with River Sabwani flooding.

“This project is just not for today but it’s aimed as sustaining future generations,” Lokwalima said.

He said the project would entail educating communities and involve them in environment conservation.

The government has already started implementing conservation activities in Mau and Embobut forests, where thousands of squatters were evicted.

So far, the government has reclaimed more than 39,500 acres of forest that had been destroyed by squatters in Embobut.

The Kenya Forest Service said wild animals that had disappeared due to destruction of the forest have started returning following the reclamation.

North Rift region conservator Solomon Mibei said they have planted more than 400,000 seedlings in Elgeyo Marakwet Forest.

Mibei said 14 security camps have been set up to guard the forest and stop human encroachment, adding communities will benefit more.
