FURTHER FLEET EXPANSION BY ETHIOPIAN AIRLINES ON THE CARDS

(Posted 29th April 2018)

Ethiopian Airlines has reportedly signed a purchase order with Bombardier for the delivery of 10 new Q400NextGen turboprop aircraft, with an added option for a further five of this aircraft type included.
The airline already operates 21 of this aircraft type in both a two class, C and Y, and single class, Y, configuration, deploying them across their domestic and near regional network as far as Eastern Africa’s main airports on off peak flights.
It could not be ascertained at this stage which configuration the 10 firm orders will have but given the trend a two class layout is the most likely option.
Aviation pundits are speculating over Ethiopian’s plans to perhaps spread this aircraft type further into their partner airline fleets, presently looking at Malawian Airlines, ASKY and soon to come the revived Zambia Airways.
Bombardier has been outselling ATR in Africa with Kenya’s Jambojet having opted for an all Q400 fleet joining such other Bombardier operators like RwandAir and Air Tanzania.
In contrast has Fastjet purchased three ATR72-600’s which will join their fleet once regulatory certification procedures have been completed.
Ethiopian operates a mixed passenger aircraft fleet comprising the Airbus A350, the Boeing B787, Boeing B777, Boeing B767 and Boeing B737NG’s besides their Bombardier turboprops.
Meanwhile is the airline still considering what smaller jet type it will purchase in the future with both Bombardier’s C Series and Embraer’s E190 reportedly being looked at. That decision was due in late 2016 and then awaited throughout 2017 and no indication was given what was prompting the extraordinarily long ‘consideration‘ period towards this decision.

November 15, 2017Abu DhabiCommercial Aircraft, Bombardier Inc., Press Release

  • NAC will provide an operating lease to Jambojet Ltd who will be the operator of the aircraft in Kenya.
Bombardier Commercial Aircraft today announced that it concluded a firm purchase agreement for two new Q400 turboprops with Nordic Aviation Capital (“NAC”) in September 2017. NAC will lease these two Q400 aircraft to Jambojet Ltd, based in Nairobi, Kenya. With the addition of these aircraft, NAC has increased its Q400 portfolio to 87 aircraft, and remains the largest fleet owner and lessor of the type in the world, while Jambojet will now operate three Q400 aircraft on lease from two lessors. Based on the list price of the Q400 aircraft, the firm order is valued at approximately $64 million US.

“The Q400 aircraft offers the perfect balance of passenger comfort and operating economics with a reduced environmental footprint,” said Fred Cromer, President, Bombardier Commercial Aircraft. “The demand for turboprop aircraft worldwide is tremendous and the Q Series aircraft are ideally positioned to meet the needs of regional airlines as they offer a unique ability to serve diverse and challenging environments. NAC's continued acquisition of the Q400 is a strong endorsement of the value, in-service performance and reliability the aircraft provides. We are thrilled that leasing companies continue to recognize the Q400 aircraft as a high-quality asset, as evidenced by this order.”

“We are delighted to have placed an order with Bombardier to grow our fleet of Q400 aircraft,” said Martin Møller, Chairman of Nordic Aviation Capital. “We warmly welcome Jambojet as a new client and the opportunity to increase our global footprint on the African Continent. We are pleased to have partnered with the Jambojet management team in their efforts to grow and modernise their fleet. The Q400 is a high-quality asset with proven operational capability and performance, and we are confident that it will enable them to meet and exceed their performance targets.bombardier.com or follow us on Twitter @Bombardier.

Utasikia sasa hivi kuwa wamenunua used...

I like Turbo prop aircrafts. They are very reliable, fuel efficient and they can operate on many challenging environment including short and dirty runways. They are very suitable for ranges below 2000 Kms.

Ona sasa mnaokota picha na kuziweka hapa bila kujuwa mna weka nini, that is Boeing 767 ambazo KQ walisha uza zote. Joke is on you

KQ didn't sell Boeing 767, they retired them. The fact that couldn't get that simple fact right confirms everything you typed in that post is hogwash.

panga boy sitaki hata kuziona, zina sura mbaya sio sura ya ndege kabisa.

Panga boy zimekuja kubadirisha usemi wa nimepanda pipa, bila shaka saizi itakuwa nimepanda bomba

Hahahaha, aircraft don't retire like human. You don't just retire an aircraft and put it somewhere in the backyard. You either sale it as whole to the aircraft breakers yard or you sale parts which are still safe to use on another aircraft. KQ have retire 767 off it's on fleet, but they didn't park them field somewhere in Kenya. If you know those aircraft are in sitting in care please share photo with us.

Dude, there's a different between a retired plane and a sold plane that's why when KQ sells a plane to ATCL we say they've sold it and when it retires a plane we say they've retired it. Read about it and stop embarrassing yourself.
