Ex-BoT governor wins continental accolades alongside CRDB Bank
CRDB Bank and former Bank of Tanzania (BoT) governor Prof Benno Ndulu have been named Best Regional Bank in East Africa and Central Bank Governor of the Year respectively at an event held in South Korea.
The bank and retired governor were unveiled on Tuesday at a gala dinner in the Korean port city of Busan. The awards, held annually on the fringes of the annual meetings of the African Development Bank (AfDB), celebrate excellence in banking and finance on the African continent.
“Prof Ndulu, who finished his second term as BoT governor last year, won the Central Bank Governor of the year award for his work in pushing for financial inclusion as well as for sound macroeconomic management,” a statement released by the event organizers said.
According to the statement, East Africa dominated the awards this year with the CEO of Equity Group Holdings Plc in Kenya, James Mwangi, winning Banker of the Year. Mwangi’s bank is said to have seen impressive growth through a series of innovations and diversified investment channels away from consumer loans.
However, South African banks dominated the investment banking and deals of the year categories. Standard Bank Group swooped three awards, including Investment Bank of the Year.
Standard Bank and Rand Merchant Bank, also of South Africa, took the Infrastructure Deal of the Year award for the $5 billion Nacala corridor rail and port project in Mozambique and Malawi, one of Africa’s largest private sector funded infrastructure projects.
The Socially Responsible Bank of the Year title went to BMCE Bank of Africa Group in Morocco, widely regarded as a leader in sustainable finance, while Le Credit Agricole du Maroc won the award for financial inclusion. Ecobank won the awards for innovation and Retail Bank of the year largely for the way it has integrated technology to considerably widen its products and reach.
According to Omar Ben Yedder, publisher of African Banker magazine which was one of the co-hosts of the event, the impressive achievements of the banks shortlisted for the 2018 awards “reflect the innovation and energy within Africa’s banking market.”
This was the first time the African Banker Awards took place in South Korea. As a shareholder in the African Development Bank, the South Korean government offered to host this year’s AfDB annual meetings with the aim of strengthening its long-standing relationship with Africa.
The 12th edition of the African Banker Awards were hosted jointly by African Banker magazine and BusinessinAfricaEvents.
