The Health Benefits of Having Sex
Having Sex Burns Calories: A lot of people already know this, or at least could assume it, but do they really know just how many calories it burns. Depending on many variables, having sex can burn about 5 or 6 calories per minute, which adds up to about 300 calories per hour. That's the equivalent of a brisk jog. To further put that in perspective, that's approximately 3 times as many calories per hour as you would burn standing or sitting.
Having Sex Releases Endorphins: The reason you might be so happy after you have sex is because it releases large amounts of endorphins. Endorphins are natures best antidepressant, and our bodies produce an endless amount of them, but only certain activities are believed to trigger them. An endorphin rush can keep you in an elated mood for quite some time, too. It is likely that you will feel "high" for several hours after having sex. The endorphin rush that sex creates will also relieve stress and help you sleep better.
Having Sex Slows Aging: In a book entitled Secrets of the Super Young, Dr. David Weeks says that his research on 3,500 people varying in age, indicated that those who had sex more regularly, appeared to be much younger then their chronological age. Sex is a form of exercise, so it is only likely that it would share most of, if not, all of the benefits of regular exercise. It is also said that happiness is one of the keys to looking younger, and a healthy sex life combined with a meaningful, intimate relationship is certain to elevate your own personal happiness.
Having Sex Boosts the Immune System: I'm sure most of us would prefer having sex over taking cough syrup. It's true, having sex at least once or twice a week will actually strengthen your immune system. When a person has sex, their body produces and releases many different chemicals and hormones. Research has shown that individuals who have sex at least once a week have higher levels of an antibody called immunoglobulin (yes, I swear it's a real word). Immunoglobulin is one of the primary weapons in our bodies immune system.
Sex Relieves Stress
A big health benefit of sex is lower blood pressure and overall stress reduction, according to researchers from Scotland who reported their findings in the journal Biological Psychology. They studied 24 women and 22 men who kept records of their sexual activity. Then the researchers subjected them to stressful situations -- such as speaking in public and doing verbal arithmetic -- and noted their blood pressure response to stress.
Those who had intercourse had better responses to stress than those who engaged in other sexual behaviors or abstained.
Another study published in the same journal found that frequent intercourse was associated with lower diastolic blood pressure in cohabiting participants. Yet other research found a link between partner hugs and lower blood pressure in women.
Although sex has all of these wonderful benefits, it should still be taken seriously, and you should only have sex responsibly. Having sex is only healthy when it's done safely and responsibly with a person you care about. Unfortunately, the added boost that having sex will give to your immune system is not enough to cure a sexually transmitted disease, so be careful and be responsible.
