FOODS THAT HELP DIABETES



In order to control Type I or Type II diabetes, it is imperative that those with this metabolic disease follow a stringent nutritional plan. In general, the foods that help diabetes have a low glycemic index (a ranked score less than fifty-five for carbohydrates that slightly elevate blood glucose) and provide key nutrients such as calcium, potassium, fiber, magnesium, and vitamin A, C and E. More specifically there are certain foods that help diabetics cope with their condition.


BEANS

Beans are starchy foods that not only satisfy energy and protein needs while burning fat, but they also help

moderate blood levels of glucose and insulin. Beans contain the highest percentages of resistant starches, dietary carbohydrates that resist digestion and pass through to the large intestine, according to Chetday.com. According

to Karen Collins, M.S., R.D., C.D.N., a nutrition adviser to the American Institute for Cancer Research, in Washington, D.C., the soluble fiber within beans binds to carbohydrates and slows their digestion which then

prevents spikes in blood glucose. In addition, the antioxidant pigments found in beans inhibit inflammation from dietary sugars and starches.

DARK GREEN LEAFY VEGETABLES

According to a study conducted at Tulane University, eating lots of green leafy vegetables such as spinach, collards and kale daily may help reduce the risk of developing diabetes. Results from the study showed a nine percent reduction in diabetes risk with every additional serving of green leafy vegetables

SWEET POTATOES

Sweet potatoes are a starchy vegetable containing a healthy dose of vitamin A and fiber. Replace regular potatoes with sweet potatoes for a lower glycemic index alternative.

BERRIES

A variety of berries including blueberries, strawberries and raspberries provide antioxidants, vitamins C, fiber, folic acid and powerful antioxidants. Berries are low in calories and fat and do not spike blood sugar because of their low carbohydrate content.
TOMATOES

Eating tomatoes help to reduce escalating inflammation brought on by diabetes. In addition, tomatoes are a great source of antioxidants (especially lycopene which is found in tomatoes), fiber, iron, and vitamins A, C and E. These nutrients play a large role in regulating blood sugar levels in the body.

FISH HIGH IN OMEGA-3 FATTY ACIDS

Eat six to nine ounces of fish per week. Salmon is highly recommended as a good source of omega-3 fatty acids. Diabetes is the leading cause of end-stage kidney disease. A study conducted in England involving 22,300 adults determined that eating at least two servings of fish each week seems to protect people with diabetes who also have kidney disease. The study, cited in "USA Today", showed that fish consumption lowers abnormal levels of protein in the urine in people with diabetes.

WHOLE GRAINS

Eating whole grains such as oatmeal, barley and bran supplies the body with high quality sources of magnesium, chromium, omega-3 fatty acids, foliate, fiber and potassium. These nutrients are responsible for regulating blood sugar within the body and giving whole grain foods a low glycemic index.

NUTS

Nuts such as walnuts, flax seeds and almonds contain magnesium, fiber and omega-3 fatty acids. Eat an ounce of nuts as a snack once a day to help keep blood sugar leveled and keep hunger controlled.

LISHE KWA MGONJWA WA KISUKARI

Suala la lishe kwa wagonjwa na hapa tunamuangalia mgonjwa wa kisukari. Kama tulivyokwisha ona katika makala nyingine zilizopita, mgonjwa yeyote wa magonjwa hatari kama presha, moyo, saratani, kisukari n.k, ni lazima ajue vyakula anavyopaswa kula au kutokula.

Elimu ya lishe ni muhimu sana, kwani madhara ya ugonjwa huonekana haraka na hata kusababisha kifo upesi, iwapo mtu ataendelea kula bila kujijua vyakula vilevile vilivyosababisha tatizo la kiafya alilonalo.

Kwa ujumla, mgonjwa wa kisukari (Diabetic), hana mipaka mingi ya vyakula, anaweza kuendelea kula vyakula vingi kama kawaida iwapo atajua jinsi ya kula, kiasi gani na kwa wakati gani. Hata hivyo, kama ulaji wake ulikuwa hauzingatii ulaji sahihi, baada ya kuugua hana hiyari bali kufuata kanuni za ulaji sahihi.

WAKATI GANI WA KULA?
Suala la kujali muda wa kula kwa mgonjwa wa kisukari ni la lazima, kwa sababu atatakiwa wakati wote kudumisha kiwango cha sukari mwilini mwake kwa kula kwa wakati uleule ili kuepuka kusikia njaa ambayo husababisha sukari kushuka kwa kasi.

KIASI GANI UNAKULA?
Vilevile suala la kula kiasi kwa mgonjwa wa kisukari si la hiyari tena, bali ni la lazima. Hata mtu akila vyakula bora vyenye virutubisho vya hali ya juu kiasi gani, kama akivila kupita kiasi huweza kusababisha unene ambao ni sababu moja wapo ya ugonjwa wa kisukari, hivyo ni muhimu kuzingatia kiasi.
Mgonjwa wa kisukari hahitaji kuwa na chakula maalumu, bali anatakiwa kutilia maanani ulaji wa mboga, matunda na nafaka zisizokobolewa. Lishe ya mgonjwa wa kisukari ni ya kawaida tu yenye vyakula vyenye virutubisho vingi na mafuta kidogo na kiasi kidogo cha wanga.

ZINGATIA

Mgonjwa wa kisukari anashauriwa kula matunda, lakini anakatazwa kunywa juisi za matunda. Halikadhalika, matunda kama ‘Apples’, ‘Peas’ na mengine ya jamii hiyo, ni bora yaliwe pamoja na maganda yake.

MLO WA WAGONJWA WA KISUKARI

Kwa kuwa ugonjwa huu unatokana na upungufu wa virutubisho fulani mwilini, kuna miongozo imetolewa ya ulaji vyakula ambavyo vikifuatwa kwa ukamilifu huweza kudhibiti ugonjwa huu kwa kiasi kikubwa na hata kuufanya usiwe tishio kwa maisha yako.

Kitu cha msingi ni mtu kujitambua mapema kama una ugonjwa wa kisukari na kisha kuchukua hatua haraka ya kuudhibiti kwa chakula. Kutegemeana na hatua iliyofikia ugonjwa wako, kisukari kinaweza kudhibitiwa ama kwa mlo peke yake au mlo na dawa.

Mtu mwenye kisukari ambacho hakijakomaa sana, anaweza kukidhibiti kwa mlo tu bila kutumia dawa yoyote na akaweza kuishi bila matatizo. Lakini kisukari kilichokomaa kinahitaji mlo pamoja na dawa na ili muathirika ajiepushe na madhara makubwa ya ugonjwa huo yanayoweza kumpata, ni lazima ahakikishe anafuata masharti ya vyakula.

Hii ina maana kwamba kama kisukari chako hakijakomaa na kuwa tishio kwa afya yako, hali hiyo inaweza kubadilika na kuwa kisukari kilichokomaa iwapo hutazingati ya ulaji wa mlo sahihi, hivyo hivyo kwa mgonjwa mwenye kisukari kilichokomaa anaweza kupoteza maisha haraka zaidi iwapo hatazingatia masharti ya vyakula, na dawa anazotumia, haziwezi kumsaidia chochote.

Mtu mwenye ugonjwa wa kisukari anatakiwa kupunguza ulaji wa vyakula vyenye wanga (Carbohydrates), kama vile viazi, mihogo, mikate myeupe (White Bread), n.k. apunguze ulaji wa vyakula vya mafuta na kula vyakula vya protein kwa kiasi kidogo.

Badala yake mgonjwa huyu anapaswa kutumia kwa wingi vyakula vyenye kiasi kikubwa cha kirutubisho kiitwacho ufumwele (fibre) ambacho hupatikana kwenye vyakula kama vile matunda, nafaka zisizokobolewa (ugali wa dona, ugali wa mtama, mikate myeusi, n.k) na aachane kabisa na kula vyakula vilivyosafishwa (refined foods) na kuondolewa virutubisho vyake (mikate myeupe, ugali mweupe, n.k).

Matunda yanapoliwa, hii ni kwa watu wote, hayapaswi kuliwa pamoja na chakula kwa wakati mmoja. Matunda huliwa saa 2 kabla ya au baada ya mlo ili kupata faida haswa za matunda. Watu wengi wanafanya makosa kula matunda, kama vile embe, papai wakati wa kula chakula cha mchana au jioni. Ulaji wa aina hii haufai na hauweze kuupa mwili wako faida za matunda.

Hata wewe ambaye huna kisukari, huu ndiyo ulaji unaotakiwa kuufuata.

Ushauri mwingine unaotolewa kwa wagonjwa wa kisukari ni ufanyaji wa mazoezi mara kwa mara, ambayo huufanya mwili kuwa fiti na kuudhibiti ugonjwa huo. Mazoezi mepesi kama vile kukimbia taratibu (jogging), kuogelea na kutembea kwa mwendo wa haraka ni njia moja wapo ya kuuweka mwili wako imara dhidi ya kisukari.

Wagonjwa wa kisukari wanashauriwa kula milo yote, hasa baada ya kutumia dawa (insulin), kutokubadili dawa bila ushauri wa daktari na kuhakikisha wanapima mkojo mara kwa mara. Wanashauriwa kutembea wakiwa wamejikinga ili wasiumie na kupata vidonda.

Likiwa lengo la kufuata lishe bora ni kuepuka kupanda na kushuka kwa sukari kwenye damu ili mtu uwe na afya imara, basi ni vizuri sana wewe uliyeathirika na kisukari kuzingatia haya yafuatayo:

1) Muda wa kula ni muhimu sana kwako. Kula mlo na vitafunwa vingine (snacks) muda ule ule kila siku kadri iwezekanvyo. Kula kitafunwa chochote wakati ufanyapo mazoezi au pale kiwango cha sukari kinaposhuka sana. Lakini hali ya kushuka sana kwa sukari inapokutokea mara kwa mara, wasiliana na daktari wako haraka.
2) Iwapo unatumia dawa, basi hakikisha kila wakati unapotaka kulala, unakula kitafunwa chochote. Kula mlo wako kwa kiwango kile kile bila kuzidisha, kwani kula kupita kiasi kunaweza kupandisha kiwango chako cha sukari.

Kwa ujumla, kila mgonjwa anapaswa kujua ni chakula gani akila kinaweza kumpa nafuu na kipi akikila kinaweza kumuongezea matatizo aliyonayo, kwa kujua hilo kuna mchoro (Food Pyramid), umeandaliwa maalumu kwa wagonjwa wa kisukari ambao unaonesha chakula kipi kinafaa kuliwa kwa wingi na kipi kiliwe kwa uchache sana. Usome kwa makini mchoro huo juu ili uelewe chakula kipi ukipende sana na kipi ukipene kidogo sana.

Healthy tips for diabetics

1. Eat food at fixed hours. Do not overeat.

2. Do not eat immediately after a workout.

3. If you are on insulin, make sure you have three proper meals with light snacks in between.

4. Do not eat fast; masticate and munch your food well before you swallow.

5. Drink a lot of water that will help flush the toxins off your system.

6. Make sure the gaps between your meals are short. Avoid fried foods and sweetmeats.

7. Include fresh vegetable salad in every meal.

8. Have at least 20 to 25 grams of raw onion daily.

9. Do at least 1 hour exercise daily.

10. Add wheat bran to your wheat flour (50% wheat flour + 50% wheat bran). This helps to increase fiber in your diet.
