Seven days after Pierre Gasly romped to a shock victory in Monza, Hamilton made no mistake at Mugello to triumph in a race which saw two red flags and a dramatic four-car pile-up. While chaos ensued behind him, Hamilton kept out of trouble to lead home teammate Valtteri Bottas, who completed another Mercedes one-two.

The Briton has now moved to within just one victory of Michael Schumacher's record 91 wins and also looks certain to match the German's unprecedented seven world titles this season.

It wasn't a trademark performance from Hamilton, as Bottas assumed the lead after a slow start off the line from the pole sitter. But after the race was red flagged for the first time following a high-speed crash involving four drivers, Hamilton took advantage to steal the lead at the restart.

And the six-time world champion nursed his Mercedes home to get back to winning ways after last week's disappointment.

The result also compounded the misery for Ferrari, who were celebrating their 1,000th Grand Prix but both drivers Charles Leclerc and Sebastian Vettel missed out on a podium once again.

For the second week in a row, it was another thrilling showdown which had to be stopped twice following high-speed crashes. The first was sparked after Antonio Giovinazzi crashed into the back of Williams driver Nicholas Latifi at the restart following a safety car period.

McLaren's Carlos Sainz then hit Giovinazzi sending the Alfa Romeo driver temporarily into the air. Haas driver Kevin Magnussen was also caught up in the accident with all four cars sent into the barriers.

Romain Grosjean was furious with Valtteri Bottas, who was leading at the time, for driving too slowly at the restart. "That was f****** stupid from whoever was at the front," the Frenchman yelled over the radio.

"They want to kill us or what? This is the worst thing I have ever seen."

The session was then brought to a temporary halt for the second time after Lance Stroll smashed his Racing Point into the barriers.

This time Hamilton held his nerve to retain top spot and was largely unchallenged for the remaining 15 laps.

By taking the chequered flag for the sixth time in eight races, Hamilton extended his lead at the top of the standings.

He is now a shoo-in to succeed Schuey as F1's most successful race winner.

And on the day that Ferrari celebrated an historic landmark, Hamilton once again showed why his name will remain forever etched in F1 record books.

Lewis Hamilton snatched pole position for the Portuguese Grand Prix from team-mate Valtteri Bottas in a thrilling end to an unusual qualifying.

Hamilton and Bottas ran theoretically slower medium tyres to set their times and a key strategy call by the Briton could have made the difference. Hamilton chose to do two hot laps at the climax to Bottas' one, and the lead swapped between them as it played out.

Red Bull's Max Verstappen took third, from Charles Leclerc's Ferrari.

Hamilton ended up beating Bottas by 0.101 seconds at the end of an unpredictable and exciting session. It was the 97th pole position of the world champion's career.
