‘’ We just want to have a really good race.”

Hamilton starts alongside Verstappen on the front row after qualifying in second, sandwiched between two Red Bulls with Sergio Perez starting third.

And with Hamilton's Mercedes team-mate Valtteri Bottas down in ninth, Hamilton is hopeful of a clear start.

“Yeah, I hope we’ll make it through Turn 1 and we get a good race,” said Hamilton. “I don’t think it’s all decided on Turn 1.

“It is all fun and games. We are going to have fun and give it everything as you would expect. It is no real difference to any other part of the season.”

The duo have already gone wheel-to-wheel in America in an odd battle during first practice heading down the straight towards Turn 1.

The 24-year-old branded Hamilton a "stupid idiot" as the pair seemed to battle for position and flicked his middle finger up at him after the pair went wheel-to-wheel at the Circuit of the Americas.

Red Bull race engineer Giampiero Lambiase responded "ignore it, don't worry about it".

Verstappen then had a second run-in with the two Haas drivers, who seemed unaware of a charging Red Bull is coming up behind them, prompting the pit wall to ask: "Need I ask what happened?"

"I need to buy people glasses," responded Verstappen.

However, afterwards, Verstappen explained what happened during the Hamilton incident, claiming he wasn't sure what had gone on.

“I don’t know, we are all lining up to go for our laps so I don’t really understand what happened there,” he told Sky Sports F1.

  • Lewis Hamilton, who finished first: "I am so grateful for the incredible support this weekend. I have not had this much support since Silverstone, so to hear the fans it has been humbling.
  • "What a race! The team did an amazing job and Valtteri did a great job to get as many points as possible. I just pushed as fast as I could but this is my hardest weekend I have had [this season].
  • "My dad reminded me of when I was in F3 in Bahrain, when I started last and finished first - so this is for my dad. I never thought we would close the gap like we did today - just never give up and never stop fighting. It feels like a first as I haven't had a win for a long time."

Lewis Hamilton disqualification 'invalid' as crucial paperwork error comes to light (msn.com)

An error has been spotted on the official paperwork announcing Lewis Hamilton's disqualification from Friday's qualifying session which, according to one pundit, could make the whole order invalid. The Mercedes ace set the fastest time in the session, but it was later scrubbed by the stewards.

After an investigation, officials found the DRS system on the rear wing of his W12 fell foul of technical rules.

They found that there was a larger gap than allowed between flaps when in the open position, improving the car's aerodynamics and giving Hamilton an unfair advantage.

Stewards ruled that the Briton's qualifying result would be scrubbed, and that he would have to start Saturday's sprint qualifying session from the back of the grid.

However, Sky Sports pundit Ted Kravitz believes he has found an issue with the official statement which could give Mercedes lawyers something to mull over.

Mercedes: New F1 engine power boost won’t last long (msn.com)

The world champion’s straightline speed performance at the Brazilian Grand Prix proved critical in allowing him to charge from the back of the grid in the Interlagos sprint race to take victory in Sunday’s main event.

Rival Red Bull admits it is still seeking answers as to just how Mercedes was so fast on the straights, as it probes ways that the German car manufacturer could be flexing its rear wing to reduce drag.

New F1 engines deliver more power than older builds, which has been in evidence at Mercedes this season when the degradation across the life of a power unit has been noticeable.

Even though Mercedes is more confident about the reliability troubles that have been a worry in recent weeks, it still expects the power advantage it has from the fresh engine to slowly disappear.

Team boss Toto Wolff said: "There is a performance drop-off with any engine.

“It means that, even though we'll be racing with the engine until the end of the season, we'll certainly lose performance."

The Mercedes call to fit another power unit at Hamilton in Brazil has left the team confident it can now make it through to the end of the campaign without needing any further changes.

“Yes, absolutely,” said Wolff. “We are going to the end of the season now with this engine. We still have questions over reliability, but we hope we have had the right answers, and we’re going to the end.”

Mercedes trackside engineer director Andrew Shovlin explained that the choice of when to take the power unit was triggered by the fact that a straightline speed boost at Interlagos would be especially valuable.

“There wasn’t a technical reason to change, as in we didn’t think we were at risk of failing and we don’t think we were at risk of failing, although these power units are running awfully hard and you can never take reliability for granted,” he said.

“There is an attraction to take a penalty at a sprint race because if you can win on a Saturday that is more points you can score and you can lessen a deficit. It was also a track that we hoped we could overtake at and recover positions, and we proved that in the last two days.

“Also you want to get these things in the pool because, when you get to Abu Dhabi, you are not going to get the advantage of it for more than a single race.

"So there are a number of reasons and it is never black and white, but on reflection we picked a good circuit to do it.”

Mercedes win right of appeal over decision not to penalise Max Verstappen (msn.com)

Formula 1 stewards will review their decision not to penalise Max Verstappen at Sunday’s Brazilian Grand Prix, motor sport’s governing body has confirmed.

Lewis Hamilton won the Interlagos race following a superb comeback drive, but championship leader Verstappen escaped punishment for running his rival off the road as they duelled for first position. The stewards noted the incident before looking at the footage and choosing not to launch a formal investigation, but Hamilton’s Mercedes team have won a right of review.

An International Automobile Federation (FIA) statement said: “In accordance with Art. 14 of the International Sporting Code (ISC), and following the petition for review by Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team, lodged on 16 November 2021, the Team Manager and such witnesses as the Competitor may request, up to three, are required to appear via video conference (invitation by separate cover) at 17:00 hrs Local (Qatar) on Thursday, November 18 2021.

“In accordance with Art. 14 ISC this hearing is to determine whether the Right of Review exists in this case, ie. whether ‘a significant and relevant new element is discovered which was unavailable to the parties seeking the review at the time of the decision concerned’.

“The names and positions of all attendees that the Competitor intends to request attend must be provided in writing no later than 12:00hrs Local (Qatar) on 18 November 2021 to the Stewards Secretary.”

FIA race director Michael Masi revealed after the stewards’ initial decision that the onboard front-facing video from Verstappen’s car was not available when the stewards acted.

The stewards have now considered the significance of the new footage and have decided it warrants an appeal. A retrospective five-second time penalty for Verstappen would see him drop behind Hamilton’s Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas to third in Sunday’s result – reducing his championship advantage over Hamilton from 14 to 11 points.
