Most of us, including me, consider "police" to be a self-contained word. However, POLICE is actually an acronym, and each letter stands for something distinct from the term's overall meaning. Even in the classroom, we learn that the police are a special force charged with the sacred duty of keeping the peace and safeguarding private property. To which the answer is a resounding "yes," because it considers it a full word.

First attested in English in the early 15th century, originally in a range of senses encompassing '(public) policy; state; public order', the word police comes from Middle French police ('public order, administration, government'),[9] in turn from Latinpolitia,[10] which is the romanization of the Ancient Greek πολιτεία (politeia) 'citizenship, administration, civil polity'.[11] This is derived from πόλις (polis) 'city'.
