Foundation for Civil Society (FCS) has signed for a Sh 1.6 billion ($714,286) grant agreement with Tanzania Human Rights Defenders Coalition (THRDC) geared at improving citizens’ participation in democratic governance and protection of human rights as well as human rights defenders in Tanzania. This is a 3-year initiative that, among other things, aims at promoting human rights in the country and also engaging citizens on civil rights.

Speaking during the contract signing, the Executive Director of FCS, Mr. Francis Kiwanga said that the grant would strengthen THRDC and other stakeholders’ efforts in the promotion and protection of human and civil rights, including that of human rights defenders, while increasing public participation on these issues. He called on Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) to adhere to transparency and accountability in their work and comply with the new government regulatory frameworks in operations of CSO and their development projects.

“The government has provided new regulations to enhance accountability and transparency in partnership agreements. The regulations require that all grant contracts exceeding TZS 20 million to be open to the public. As a key player in the development of the civil society in our country, we are mandated with a responsibility to remind and stress the importance of compliance to the set laws and regulations for our sector” he said.

During his remarks, the Executive Director for THRDC, Mr Onesmo Ole Ngurumo expressed his gratitude to FCS for the support as it will assist in their work on promoting and protecting human rights in the country.
