Statoil Company has launched a business competition dubbed ‘Heroes of tomorrow' aimed at promoting entrepreneurship among the youth in Mtwara Region.
Speaking on behalf of the Mtwara Regional Commissioner (RC) Joseph Simbakalia at the launch event over the weekend, the Regional Administrative Secretary (RAS) Alfred Luanda said company's operating in the area should not focus on profits alone but also seek to help the communities in which they operate.
"By providing support to youth in matters like provision of capital it will help the region develop, reduce crime and increase innovation," he said.
Country Manager Statoil Company, Qystein Michelson said the aim of the competition is to ensure youth in the region benefit from the discovery of natural gas in the area.
"Natural gas industry is very wide and it demands more experts and so the youth must be prepared to take on the challenge," Michelson noted.
He said the competition is also been conducted in other parts of the world where the company operates including Norway where it has helped promote social cultural values.
The competition is limited to youth between18 and 25 years of age who are to submit their business ideas from which 40 ideas will be selected then training and coaching offered on how to best develop the business idea.
The winner will be awarded USD 5000 and the four finalists will receive USD 1000 each.
"Statoil believes in supporting young talented people in the countries where we operate in this way we promote development in the societies where we have our operations," Michelsen said.
