The government has written a protest letter to the European Union (EU) delegation to Kenya over what it terms betrayal after it withdrew support for CS Amina Mohamed’s bid to head the World Trade Organization (WTO).⁣
Kenya wrote to the EU on Tuesday after a Cabinet meeting where the matter was discussed, citing misrepresentation of facts about Amina’s bid, sources said yesterday.⁣

Sources within government and diplomatic circles told The Standard that the EU had indicated support for Amina when campaigns started. EU had promised to support Kenya’s bid financially and also take a leading role in lobbying for the Sports CS, they said.⁣
⁣
However, as assurances were being made in Nairobi, a separate campaign was being orchestrated from the EU headquarters in Brussels with a different candidate being fronted.⁣

Kenya’s candidacy lost steam after EU members questioned Amina’s loyalty to the goals and ideals of the WTO.

The EU should face consequences on this including cancelling the the contract for the construction of Nakuru highway that Uhuru took to them in Paris. Rumours that it has been cancelled by Macron better be true because we wont pay that French firm toll money after this. That road can be constructed by locals. They should also not be granted any trade deal to access our markets because we are not selling them anything useful anyway, all of them Britain, USA and EU. But I know this wont happen with this guy

Hiyo barbara wanajenga ilipaswa kulipwa na Wakenya moja kwa moja kupitia vitio vya toll, yani gari zinalipa ndio zitumie hiyo barbara. Wanajenga na pesa yao ya gharama ya juu Sana kisha gari zinalipa kupita hapo, huu haukuwa msaada.

We are not interested in arm twisting the EU. If there was a deal, then they should leave by it otherwise there should be consequences. We have a number of options we can retaliate with including the trade deal that other EAC countries have blocked. We just need to stop talking to them citing EAC concerns. But I don't think the people at foreign affairs are that smart to follow through this.

Other EAC countries are not interested in the trade deal because they already have an access to that market so there is no going against EAC here because access to EAC can only be granted by EA states.

Also I have already indicated that all those trade deals are lopsided against Kenya because we are not selling them anything but a very few list of items when their products are meant to destroy our markets without any safeguards.
