Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards players strike over unpaid salaries

Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards players have threatened to boycott their respective Kenyan Premier League fixtures against Ushuru and Ulinzi Stars set for Wednesday owing to unpaid salary arrears.

The two league giants owe their playing units hefty salary arrears and winning bonuses. On Tuesday, both sets of players boycotted training even with important league assignments up on the cards.

Unbeaten Gor are scheduled to take on Ushuru at the Nairobi City Stadium from 4pm while Leopards have a date with East Africa Military Games bound Ulinzi Stars at the Nyayo National Stadium from 7pm.

Gor Mahia treasurer Kennedy Otieno confirmed to Daily Nation Sport on Tuesday that the club owes their head coach, Frank Nuttall, three months’ salary arrears while the playing unit are owed July salaries only.

“It’s only the technical bench that have a claim because we have been paying them in bits. For the players, we only owe them July salaries and about eight matches winning bonuses. We have no sponsors and depend on gate collections,” he said.

CECAFA MONEY SHARED

Otieno also said that out of the 20,000 USD (Sh2million) prize money the team won for finishing as runners-up in the Cecafa Club Championship, 10,000 USD (Sh1million) was shared amongst the playing unit, while, 5,000 USD (Sh0.5milion) was paid to the head coach.

The balance he said catered for hotel bills incurred by team’s additional members of delegation in Tanzania because Cecafa only met the expenses of 25 people.

Gor’s coach, Nuttall, is the highest paid tactician locally with a monthly salary of Sh650,000 and going by Otieno’s projections, the club owes him a staggering Sh1.95milion in salary arrears alone.

Ingwe players also failed to train for the second successive day as trouble at the den continues to deepen.

Club chairman Walter Onyino was at pains to confirm whether his discontented players will honour the fixture.

“We are doing all we can to convince the boys to honour the fixture. The coach (Zdravko Logarusic) is still on sabbatical, because we still owe him money. We did not chase him away,” he said.

Whereas trouble at Leopards has been running for some time now, the disquiet at Gor comes as a surprise bearing in mind that they have enjoyed some tranquility and have also been impressive on the pitch.

The two clubs have 27 league titles between them, with Gor leading with 14 crowns and look set to add their 15th gong by the end of the season.
