During a parliamentary session on May 29, 2024, Special Seats Member of Parliament Tunza Malapo questioned the government's stance on the price hike, noting that a voucher previously costing Sh500 now sells for Sh600. She stressed the confusion among citizens regarding this price increase.
The price of scratch card mobile vouchers in Tanzania has increased from Sh1,000 to Sh1,200, prompting the government to instruct the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) to ensure that service providers do not raise prices arbitrarily.
In response, Deputy Minister for Information, Communication, and Information Technology, Maryprisca Mahundi, acknowledged that the issue has emerged in various regions, including Tunduma, Mbozi, and Songwe. She assured that TCRA has been directed to ensure service providers adhere to regulations and do not raise prices without proper procedures.
Additionally, in a primary question, Tunza inquired about the resolution of communication issues in certain wards of Mtwara Urban. Maryprisca responded that the Universal Communications Service Access Fund (UCSAF) is addressing the availability of communication services in rural and peripheral urban areas with low commercial appeal. She indicated that UCSAF would assess peripheral areas in Mtwara Urban facing communication challenges to include them in the service plan for the 2024/25 financial year.
