Dar es Salaam. Finance and Planning Shadow Minister Halima Mdee has called on the government to clarify on the poor state of the country's economy. Ms Mdee, who is also the Kawe legislator (Chadema), said on Thursday that concerns raised by the Chadema national chairman, Freeman Mbowe, recently on the state of the economy, have not yet been answered. "

The response from the government spokesperson Dr Hussein Abbas on why the government is experiencing economic turbulence does not hold water at all," she said. She says there are many issues that need answers with one of them being why the contribution of agriculture on Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is steadily dwindling.

Agriculture employs over 70 per cent of Tanzanians. The Kawe legislator also needs the government to explain how it plans to revive the agriculture sector, which is regarded as the backbone of the country’s economy.

"The government says our economy at the rate of 7 per cent, but how does it reflect in ordinary people’s lives across the country?. The growth must reflect in the lives of the people," noted Ms Mdee.

They want you to suffer so that you can worship them,it true things are going out of hands but the government has decided to put on a diff ear

indeed there is no essence of having a 7% economic growth rate whereas almost 70% of Tanzanian families cannot afford 3 meals a day or even secure clean and safe water its about time that this statistics are a reflection of an average Tanzanian man

Economic growth is not about cash distribution to people but rather, equitable service rendering to the people!
By the way do you compare and contrast / check and balance periodic gradual pros and cons of changes from the colonial era to date?
Remember, development is a process and not an overnight triumph and that, ups and downs are explicit!

People's WELFARE is a "lagged dependent variable" in response to government's FISCAL/MONETARY POLICY changes (there is your Econometrics 101).

In lay terms:
It takes time for the economy to realize/manifest the effects of government policy changes.

Kimatumbi:
Sera mpya za serikali hazikolei kama chumvi. Huchukua muda (lag) kuona mafao ya sera.

CDM shouldn't confuse people with their bogus economic interpretations.

Country economy is like a big ship and not a small boat. It takes time to steer a big ship into a new direction unlike steering a small boat. I thought Ms. Mdee and Mr. Mbowe knew this.

Politicians should consult economists (unless they are economist themselves) before making such heroic statements in public. It is embarrassing.

There is nowhere in that writing that says economic growth means cash distribution to the people. That is your own narrow minded interpretation.
The honorable MP questions why the agriculture sector is lagging behind yet it constitutes a significant portion of our national economy.
I cannot believe that you want to absolve the ruling elites just because you are slightly better off than you were half a century ago. Look at similar economies in other parts of the world and where they are now then make the judgement!

Cry beloved Tanzania. Such is the caliber of your so called "academics".

I didn't expect a bogus like you to name your fellow *bogus*, The Late Nyerere once said "Development should be people centred" when you say the economy grow at rate of 7% it should reflect the livelihood of common citizen.

But dont you also find it annoying when our leaders boast about paperwork statistical economic growth rather than focusing on the IMPLICATIONS OF THOSE STATISTICS to common mwananchi

Every year they claim paperwork growth but they dont claim growth in the welfare of the taxpayers

Do you care sharing with us your macroeconomic explanation of what Mbowe and Mdee pontificated earlier?

No it doesn't. A lot goes into the computation of country's economic growth.

It is strange to ask a narrow minded person to look at the parameters of other economies of other parts of the world and make comparison! Nonetheless, revisit the question from Hon. Halima Mdee:"The government says our economy at the rate of 7 per cent, but how does it reflect in ordinary people’s lives across the country? What do you think this question implies (if not money possession)?
All in all, let us agree in principle that, good economy is which accessibility to basic needs is available and affordable (be it today or a half century ago)!

But dont you also find it annoying when our leaders boast about paperwork statistical economic growth rather than focusing on the IMPLICATIONS OF THOSE STATISTICS to common mwananchi

Do you want to make us believe that most of Tanzanians have no power to purchase necessary human needs? Do you want to tell us that installed necessary economic and social infrastructures are not seen and observed? Guys, let us appreciate what is happening and believe that sooner than later, we will be up and enjoying our social and economic well being!
It is a matter of having a positive perception and self consciousness!
Digest and cheers!

Yes its evident that most Tanzanians 70% according to world bank stats they survive below 2 dollars in two days meaning majority are poor so I don't think its an issue to debate

2. Your saying infrastructures are in place hence we should applaud that one!! Well its a gud thing but however it makes no sense to have it all while agriculture which 70% of Tanzanians depend is still in tatters

The problem about Tanzania is priorities I mean why should u prioritise chato airport or bombardiers rather than investing in irrigation projects and agriculture sector which will directly impact the majority of the citizens?

In turn they will keep on claiming 7% annual growth while those sectors like agriculture which touches the majority of Tanzanians is still in zero figures

The debate must go on even if one vows to cross the floor because:
1.We are what we are because of the choice we made or did not make. Being human beings, we need to plan our well being by controlling our reproduction growth rate against economic growth rate;
2. We need to utilize the available agricultural support by the government (Extension services), financial institutions and NGOs.
By the way, have you ever visited Ruvuma, Mbeya, Njombe, Songwe, Ruvuma, Rukwa, Lindi, Mtwara and other giant food and other cash crops producers' zones?
Nonetheless, the Bombardiers and Chato Airport might not tick into most of negative receptionists minds but, as time comes and goes, the necessity will be observed bearing in mind that Chato is not only neighborly to most of the North West Zone countries but also to gold, nickel, fishing, cotton, coffee, etc potential areas.
Digest and cheers!

1. I agree We need to plan but planning goes in accordance to consistency and level of priority now imagine kikwete came with KILIMO KWANZA reaching halfway to its long road to success suddenly TANZANIA YA VIWANDA then I'm sure even before we reach HE Magufuli's vision of industrialising Tanzania a new president will come let's assume lowassa with ELIMU KWANZA I mean as a nation where are we heading?? We need to have clear objectives plans and priorities in which all the incoming presidents will abide by but this type of so called planning which die prematurely after a presidential term will not take us anywhere

2. I can see ur giving solutions while the current state budget has reduced the funds to be allocated in the agriculture ministry also ministry of water which directly impacts agriculture has also been allocated less funds than last fiscal year and u expect a major shift in this crucial sector ???

3. Chato airport might be a good idea Yes but is it a priority for now?? Why not build a bigger airport in the capital city or renovate the Mwanza airport??? I don't think it was a good idea to me rather it should be allocated to crucial sectors which directly impact the citizens such as agriculture water Education and so on so that if there is a 7% increase just know it will be reflected in real life and not on papers or shelves in treasury department

I get the point! Prioritization! Who opts for that?

The economy is growing at full breakneck speed like Zimbabwe's economy so no need to complain.

Thanks for the observation from the angle of your economic know-how! By the way can you come up with a comprehensive solution on how to increase the speed (increase the speed of the breakneck) or break the breakneck speed?

Increase my salary then I will come up with a credible solution.
