Kenya Airways has posted a Ksh6.1 billion ($61 million) net loss for the nine months to December as it announced a change in its financial calendar to sync with the calendar year.

The national carrier's management has attributed the loss position to higher fuel costs and the negative impact of a prolonged electioneering period.

Fuel costs, which went up 14 per cent in the period, remain the biggest challenge to KQ's profitability.

Route expansion

However, the airline has an optimistic outlook for 2018 as it plans to rollout daily flights between Nairobi and New York this October, non-stop flights to Cape town and direct flights to Mauritius.

Chief executive Sébastian Mikosz said the full financial impact of the new US route will be felt in 2019, adding he expects a revenue boost of between 8 and 10 per cent.

A Canadian contractor has seized a Dash 8-400, msn 4559, that was due to have been delivered to Air Tanzania (TC, Dar-es-Salaam) last month.

The state-owned carrier is expecting three Q400s (of which two have already been delivered) and two CS300s from Bombardier (BBA, Montréal Trudeau) along with one B787-8 from Boeing (BOE, Chicago O'Hare) as part of its fleet renewal plans. All aircraft are procured by the Tanzanian state via its TGF - Tanzanian Government Flight leasing vehicle.

According to The Citizen newspaper, Tanzanian Opposition Member of Parliament (MP) for Singida East, Tundu Lissu, told a press conference last week that Stirling Civil Engineering secured the seizure order as part of a 2010 International Court of Arbitration verdict in its favour.

Dodoma — FOUR newly procured planes for Air Tanzania Company Limited (ATCL) are expected in the country next July, the government announced here yesterday.

The Director of Information Services, Dr Hassan Abbas said the new planes from the Canadian Bombardier Manufacturer will arrive in the next four months. The government statement ends months of speculations on the fleet plight.

The government signed a firm purchase agreement with Bombardier Commercial Aircraft for the two Q400 turboprop airliners in July 2016. The 76-seater aircraft chiefly for commercial airline operations were pegged at 62 million US dollars (over 140bn/-).The state further signed another 224.6 million US dollar (over 500bn/-) deal for one Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner and jetliners CS300 to add up to the already delivered two Q400 planes.

Hahahaha in July they will say January 2019
