Hasheem Thabeet: The Tanzanian Phenom

Thabeet cites shoulder in canceling workout
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP)—Hasheem Thabeet canceled a pre-draft workout with the Grizzlies on Sunday citing a shoulder injury, but he also had plans to talk to other teams.

“Thabeet was a combination of he’s had some shoulder situations and he wanted to talk to some other teams,” Grizzlies general manager Chris Wallace said of the 7-foot-3 center out of Connecticut. “It’s also what goes on this time of the year with guys showing, not showing, that type of thing. The gamesmanship of the draft.”

Memphis officials have already met with Thabeet twice in preparation for Thursday’s NBA draft. Wallace said he expects to meet Thabeet later this week, but probably not for a workout.

The draft’s top-rated big man, Thabeet averaged 13.6 points, 10.8 rebounds and 4.2 blocks (second in the nation) for the Huskies last season, when he was co-Big East player of the year.

A number of projections have him going to the Grizzlies with the No. 2 pick, others have Memphis taking Spanish point guard Ricky Rubio. The Los Angeles Clippers are expected to take Oklahoma forward Blake Griffin at No. 1.

The debate on Thabeet is that he is not an offensive presence, has only adequate rebounding numbers and may not be strong enough to battle in the post. But there also is the potential for continued improvement. The native of Tanzania did not start playing basketball until he was 15.

Sunday’s cancellation does not affect the Grizzlies’ consideration of Thabeet, although Wallace didn’t reveal his draft plans.

“We go on what they do in their careers. That’s the vast majority of your final grade,” Wallace said. “The workout has very little to do with it. You’re just covering yourself with the workout.”

With Thabeet’s cancellation, the Grizzlies watched Jordan Hill, the 6-10 forward-center out of Arizona, and Demar DeRozan, a guard-forward from USC, in individual workouts.

Congrats Thabeet. I'm proud of any Tanzanian doing good. Wakilisha mkuu.

HASHEEM THABEET A TOP 3 LOCK

Hasheem Thabeet met with both the Oklahoma City Thunder and the Memphis Grizzlies over the weekend in Los Angeles. Thabeet was reportedly told by the Thunder that they would take him at No. 3 if the Grizzlies don't. Thabeet was supposed to work out for the Grizzlies last week, but cited an injury for his reason that he decided not to work out for them.

It's still probable that the Grizzlies will take Thabeet at No. 2, unless they receive an overwhelming trade offer. It appears that the Thunder will be happy with either Thabeet or Ricky Rubio, whichever player becomes available at No. 3. But if by some chance the Grizzlies decide to take neither of the two, the Thunder will take Thabeet. That would be bad news for Rubio because the Kings, who watched Rubio work out in Sacramento on Monday, don't seem all that high on him. I would still bet on the Kings drafting Rubio if he's available and possibly trading him for another point guard, but the Rubio camp will be pretty nervous if he falls past No. 3.

NEW YORK — The Memphis skyline just got a little taller, while UConn’s pipeline to the NBA got a little longer.

The Memphis Grizzlies selected Hasheem Thabeet with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2009 NBA draft on Thursday night at Madison Square Garden’s WaMu Theater.

Thabeet, the 7-foot-3 center who shot-blocked his way to consecutive national defensive player of the year honors at UConn, joins Emeka Okafor (2004) as the Huskies’ highest-ever draft pick.

“I’m happy and excited,” said Thabeet, who is UConn’s 15th first-round selection and 10th lottery pick over the past 20 years. “I look forward to being part of the Grizzlies’ organization.”

Neither A.J. Price nor Jeff Adrien, who just completed their senior years at UConn, were selected in the first round.

Seated with his mother, Rukia Manka, the normally ebullient Thabeet seemed somewhat subdued upon hearing his name as the second called. As expected, Blake Griffin of Oklahoma went to the Los Angeles Clippers with the No. 1 pick.

“I was surprised,” Thabeet said. “(The Grizzlies) were calling my agent … I was waiting to hear what’s going to happen. I ended up in Memphis, so I’m happy.”

Thabeet had canceled a schedule workout with the Grizzlies last weekend — a move, some believed, that indicated he didn’t want to get picked by Memphis.

“I was going to be happy wherever I ended up,” he insisted. “This is, for me, a great opportunity to go out there and play ball and have fun.”

Per the NBA’s rookie salary scale, Thabeet will earn $3.7 million next year and $3.9 million in 2010-11. The Grizzlies hold a third-year option for $4.2 million, and a fourth-year option that would represent a 26.2 percent increase.

Thabeet’s selection kicks off the next step in his journey from Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania, to basketball stardom. He only took up the sport at age 14, shortly before moving to the United States, and was still very much a project upon enrolling at UConn in 2006.

Although he was a defensive force from the start of his freshman season, Thabeet struggled to even catch the ball – never mind shoot it — early on.

“When I came here, I never thought, first of all, that I would be able to make it to Division 1 basketball,” he said. “I ended up at UConn, and when I got to UConn, I got to be coached by Jim Calhoun. He pushed me since day one.”

Thabeet gradually improved on the offensive end, upping his scoring average from 6.2 points per game as a freshman to 10.5 as a sophomore to 13.6 this past season. He shared Big East co-player of the year honors last season with Pittsburgh’s DeJuan Blair and announced he was entering the NBA draft in April.

“I had to believe in myself that I can definitely do it,” he said. “After my freshman year, I was young and I had to grow up and (Calhoun) prepared me mentally pretty well for me to believe in myself. He challenged me and I can challenge myself to be man enough to go out there and play ball, and I ended up believing in myself since my freshman year.”

Thabeet considered leaving for the NBA after both his freshman and sophomore seasons. Calhoun told him leaving after his freshman year “is going to be the worst mistake in your life. I had to believe in him and trust him and told my family that I can wait a couple of years for me to be in the NBA … To me, this is a blessing.”

Thabeet’s father, Thabit Manka, passed away several years ago. He becomes the first Tanzanian-born player ever to be selected in the NBA draft.

“It’s a blessing,” he said. “The first five years (away from home), I didn’t get to see my family … I used to speak to them on the phone every two or three weeks, and now they are here and get to experience this with me. I don’t even know how to explain that. It’s just a great feeling and I’m happy that (my mother) was there to experience it.”

Thabeet joins a Memphis team that now features four 7-footers: starting center Marc Gasol, who averaged 11.9 points per game last season, Chris Mihm, rookie Hamed Haddadi and Thabeet. A fifth, infamous draft bust Darko Milicic, was traded Thursday night to the New York Knicks.

Thabeet will also be teammates with former UConn star Rudy Gay, who led the Grizzlies in scoring last season, and Big East rival Sam Young from Pitt, who was selected by the Grizzlies in the second round.

Maneno mazito haya mkuu non the less ushauri mzuri sana. Go Thabeet, wakilisha.

Fans wa Memphis wamechukia sana kwa Griz kumchagua Hasheem, hawaoni kama atawasaidia since they already have Gasol in the same position ambayo Hasheem anachezea, Hasheem ana kazi kubwa ya kuprove doubters wrong, with the first one being that he has no offense, kwangu mimi naona huu ni uongo, he has increased his scoring average for the last three years in college, and anybody whos as tall as thabeet will score in the paint or get double teamed which in turn will increase his assist percentage.
I am rooting for Hasheem to make all rookie team.
