LIKE JULIUS NYERERE BEFORE him, President Jakaya Kikwete of Tanzania is an affable man with a down-to-earth demeanour that has endeared him to millions beyond his countrys borders.

But while the late Nyereres dress sense reflected the humility of the working class, Kikwete is clearly a symbol of the capitalism that Tanzania now embraces; a scion of the elegance that has become the trademark of the emerging generation of African presidents.

Kikwete is easily East Africas best dressed head of state, being not only well groomed but with a charisma to match.

To big name fashion designers, he represents a new breed of youthful, urbane African presidents who make time to consult fashion designers and browse magazines to keep abreast of evolving trends in both formal and casual wear.

This new fashion-consciousness is a source of new wealth for mainly European fashion designers especially with the two five-year term limit ushering in more youthful and more trendy African heads of state.

They are worldly, being well travelled and thus more exposed to Western designer wear not to mention having the trim figures needed to set it off.

Im sorry but that shirt is horribly retro-psychedelic, the contrast in colors could have gotten away in a pattern with much smaller cells, but this is a screaming kaleidoscope.

i dont think that kikwete represents the high class modernaised presidential personality,its very obvious that Nyerere wore what he wore bcse during his time there where no such merchandise as there are today. let the president wear modernly cse it adds to the flavor of his high ranking position within the country.

I think nothing is wrong with the dress. The dress is just fantastic good. Huyo ambaye anaongelea kivingine hiyo itakuwa design nyingine na siyo hii. Hii ni design nyingine na imemtoa mkuu wetu wa nchi. wakati mwingine tujifunze kuwa positive kwa obvious!!!

You sould have seen the way he dresed when he visited Museveni's ranch and I wonder with that attitude you can call the him dressed president.

My take from John Kariuki piece is this paragraph:

"This new fashion-consciousness is a source of new wealth for mainly European fashion designers especially with the two five-year term limit ushering in more youthful and more trendy African heads of state."

And not that he meant to give compliment to Mr. President. The piece also potray the image that our President is more concerned with trivial than non-trivial matters, which is contrary to voter's expectations.

In my opinion, the piece is more disapproving than otherwise.

The article is just what it is an honest observation of one Mr. John Kariuki.
Stop over analyzing and fault finding.

In not so many words he has complemented JK.

I do not believe that in anyway it was meant to be sarcastic, ironical or of ridicule.

Do you not agree that JK is youthful, Urbane and trim?
