Nakuru launches Sh550m facility to boost healthcare

A Sh550 million unit specialising in mother and baby has been opened at the Nakuru Level Five Hospital in universal health coverage drive.
The facility named after the First Lady Margaret Kenyatta will offer services ranging from maternity, paediatric and gynaecological care to cancer treatment.
It is expected to serve mothers in Nakuru and neighbouring counties such as Bomet, Baringo Narok, Kericho, Samburu, Laikipia and Nyandarua.
The mother and baby unit has four theatres, newborn and intensive care units, gynaecology, kangaroo mother care and grower’s units.
Nakuru level five hospital records between 900 and 1,000 births a month and the new facility is expected to serve at least 500 more patients.
Speaking during the opening ceremony, Ms Kenyatta said a huge investment in health facilities is still needed to improve health services across the country. She called for increased budgetary allocation and donor support.
She also rooted for the recruitment of more nurses to address staffing issues in public health facilities.
“I applaud the county’s plans to deliver comprehensive healthcare services through the upgrade so that it too can better serve as the largest public health facility in the region,” said Ms Kenyatta.
The facility is expected to employ more midwives, adding to the current 53 to cater for the additional patients

New Sonko Pumwani Maternity Hospital
Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has announced a "new look" 'Sonko Pumwani Maternity Hospital and College of Nursing and Midwifery' that he says will stand next to the troubled facility in Nairobi County.
In a post on his official Facebook page on Friday, the governor said they found a "permanent solution" after meeting a consortium that proposed to put up a new 450-bed hospital. Mr Sonko said the company also proposed a 250-bed hospital in Mutuini.
FACILITIES
The governor said that at Sonko Pumwani, surgeries will be offered alongside immunisation, diagnostic and 24-hour emergency services.
"The new 10-storey Sonko Pumwani Maternity hospital, which will stand side by side with the old hospital, will [have] a paediatric Intensive Care Unit (ICU), an adult ICU, a High Dependency Unit, staff quarters, laundry and all necessary facilities," Mr Sonko said.
The hospital, that will cover a total area of 39,699m2, will also have a labour ward, delivery suites with four fully functional theatres and a post-natal ward.

Nairobi county partners with NHIF to cover poor household
Nairobi County will partner with the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) to cover poor households.

Governor Mike Sonko said the new medical scheme will be unveiled soon to cushion vulnerable groups in the city.

He said the cover will ensure residents get quality and free medical services in county hospitals.

Sonko spoke on Friday during the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the Kihumbuini Stadium in Kangemi.

“My administration will partner with NHIF to ensure quality and affordable health care services are offered in our county hospitals. I want us to support President Uhuru Kenyatta’s Big Four agenda by offering accessible healthcare to the public,” said Sonko.

Sonko also announced plans to transform Pumwani maternity hospital.

The Governor has said his administration will fully implement a task force report that was formed after the recent discovery of twelve bodies of infants at the hospital.

Aga Khan partners with Pumwani for training, better services
The Aga Khan University Hospital has confirmed partnering with Nairobi County to advise and help Pumwani Maternity Hospital improve care for women and newborns.
According to the private hospital, the partnership will include specialty training in nursing, obstetrics/gynaecology and paediatrics.
Specialist trainees and university faculty will collaborate with Pumwani's medical and nursing staff.
“Aga Khan University’s Centre of Excellence for Women and Child Health, along with the medical college, have entered discussions to advise and assist Pumwani Maternity Hospital to improve care for women and newborns,” said a statement from the hospital.
