TANU and the Chagga People:

In the local field of Chagga politics, however the break came earlier. It did not come from TANU branches as such which, though they had started in 1955 on the mountain, had made little headway among the people.

It came from Machame, from the chiefly rival whom Mangi Mkuu had supplanted in 1951.

Chief Abdieli Shangali threw the weight of his authority behind his son-in-law, Solomon Eliufoo, and this was the decisive factor.

Eliufoo, a commoner from one of the oldest clans in Machame, and a Lutheran-trained teacher, was abroad in the United States and Great Britain from 1953 to 1956.

In 1957 he returned as a teacher and joined the TANU branch in Machame.

In 1958 he entered politics; he became a nominated member of the Chagga Council, being nominated by Hai divisional council of which his father-in-law, Chief Abdieli Shangali was chairman. The same year he was elected member of the legislative council in Dar-Es-Salaam on the TANU ticket.

From 1958 onwards he was engaged in central politics becoming Minister of Health from 1959 to 1960, and in 1962 Minister of Education, a post which he held up to 1967.

At the local level, he organised and led opposition to the Mangi Mkuu and by 1959 he called for the resignation or abdication of the Mangi Mkuu and the democratization for the local governments, forming a new party called Chaga Democratic Part

Towards the end of 1959 the opposition of the Chaga Democratic party forced a deadlock in the Chaga Council.

A vote was taken in the council as to whether a referendum should be held on Kilimanjaro to decide whether the Chaga wanted a Paramount Chief for life or a periodically elected president.

The Vote was carried by a narrow majority, and the Mangi mkuu was abolished.

After independence, through Nyerere's socialism and integration policies, the rule of Chiefs, was diminished.

Daily life of Chagga people and culture

Since fish are absent from most of the streams of their areas, like the Taita, fish were seen as unfit to eat, and of them were seen having same nature as serpents, who are considered bad in Chagga culture.

The Chagga people bred fowls in large number, to sell to the passing caravans of traders from the East coast, for they themselves abjured poultry as food, it was as seen as unwholesome and unmanly for obvious reasons, like the tenderness of its flesh.

Their most prized domestic animals are the oxen, the goat and the sheep the dog however, is used to help guard compounds from intruders at night. The oxen are still highly valued.

They belong to the humped Zebu breed prevalent throughout East Africa since the days of Ancient Egyptians. The goats are small and handsome with small horns.

Milk is an essential part of Chagga diet. The chagga diet is predominantly meat, but the main diet is vegetables. Among the plants grown for food are maize, sweet potatoes, yams, arums, beans, peas, red millet and bananas.

The chagga brew a delicious drink called Mbege, which is made of millet and bananas and left to ferment for 10 days prior to festivities.

Cultural heritage of Chagga People in Tanzania

Traditional Chagga instruments include wooden flutes, bells, and drums. Dancing and singing are part of almost every celebration.

With exposure to other ethnic groups and Western culture, the Chagga have shown a liking for various types of music.

These include Swahili songs produced by various Tanzanian bands, and West and Central African music and dance forms.

Reggae, pop, and rap are popular with the youth.The Chagga have rich oral traditions and have managed to record most of their history.They have many legends and songs.

Proverbs are used to guide youth and convey wisdom.

Folklore of Chagga People and their Culture

Chagga legends center on Ruwa and his power and assistance. Ruwa is the Chagga name for their god, as well as the Chagga word for "sun." Ruwa is not looked upon as the creator of humankind, but rather as a liberator and provider of sustenance.

He is known for his mercy and tolerance when sought by his people. Some Chagga myths concerning Ruwa resemble biblical stories of the Old Testament.

In the past, chiefdoms had chiefs who rose to power through war and trading. Some famous past chiefs include Orombo from Kishigonyi, Sina of Kibosho, and Marealle of Marangu.

IM NOT A CHAGA BUT IN MY MBA IN ENTREPRENEURSHIP SUBJECT AS MANY PEOPLE CAN RECALL TWO SCHOOLS OF THOUGHTS I.E. IF ENTREPRENEURS ARE BORN OR MADE, we can both agree that there is no consesus, with reference to whether entrepreneurs are are born, chaga in our case is a sited example, indians with asia etc,

It is clear by tracing their historical background (Arab descendants???!!!!!), these people are far away, As far as Im concerened and majority of brave people ukiona kuna nuru komaa hapohapo, wachaga kuanzisha is not an issue, is what is the content and mission. Sioni tatizo la Chadema kuanzishwa na kuendelezwa apart from others Chagas yet some other tribes are already in,

If you know the history of TANU you will know the contribution of coastal tribes, the Sykes until when Nyerere came in. Kizuri unaiga, kibaya unapiga chini, sera za udini zinaturudisha tulikotoka which is not rite.

Hicho chama hata Nyerere alikuwa anaki-support ili kuuwa nguvu za machifu na kuwazuia UTP[united tanganyika party] wasipate nguvu Uchaggani.

Pia, Solomon Eliufoo alikuja kuwa key figure ktk siasa za Tanu. kuna kipindi alikuwa waziri wa elimu. kutokana na kazi yake nzuri chuo kikuu cha D'Salaa walimtunukia shahada ya heshima ya udaktari PhD.

Mwisho, hakuna ukabila wowote ule katika kuanzishwa chama hicho. jamii za Tanganyika wakati huo zilikuwa hazijaitambua dhana ya UTAIFA. Dhana ya umoja wa kitaifa imeletwa ilianza na chama cha TANU. vyama vya makabila vilikuwepo maeneno mengi kama Wazaramo Union, Wapare Union, Sukumaland federal council, naamini hata Wameru na Waluguru nao walikuwa na vyama vyao.
 
Japo mimi sio Mchaga lakini hapo ndipo ninapowakubali sana wachagga, it seems wachagga walio wengi brains zao ziko active ukilinganisha na makabila mengine Tanzania, kama hawa watu walikuwa na viongozi wenye ideas za ki mapinduzi, no wonder mpaka leo hii wasomi wengi Tanzania ni wachagga, matajiri wengi Tanzania ni wachagga.

Big up wachagga, lait kama makabira yote yangekuwa na watu "wajanja" kama hawa wazee walioanzisha CDP, basi Tanzania kusingekuwa na upuuzi, coz hakuna ambaye angekuwa Tayari kukubali kuonewa au kuibiwa kiboya kama Chama Cha Mapinduzi Kinavyoitafuna Nchi.

Honest thinking at last. And far will you really go for this kind of thinking. Yours is not a shallow as you wrote but the candid mind that Tanzania is need of in this age to bring sanity in us. Thank you and good luck to you man!

Mkuu ni hatari kutumia vitabu vya dini kujipa ujiko. Iwapo kabila lako halitakuwa na connection yoyote na kizazi cha Jacobs, basi utakuwa unatenda dhambi kubwa.

Vilevile katika vitabu hivyo vya dini vinasema kuwa kama wewe ni mtoto au mjukuu wa Ibrahim, jaribu kufanya yale ya Ibrahim.

Wameru (kwa asili waliitwa waarwa) walihamia kwenye miteremko ya mlima Meru katika karne ya 15/16. Kwa asili walitokana na mababu wawili walioitwa Kaaya (aliyekuja kuwa kiongozi wa kabila au Mangi) na Mbise ambao walizaliwa na kiongozi aliyeitwa Lemireny (aliyekuwa msoma nyakati, mbashiri, na mwenye uwezo wa kuongoza njia). Walikuwa pia na walioambatana nao kwa ajili ya kuwalinda njiani na kuwasaidia kazi mbalimbali katika safari yao.

Inaaminika kwamba walitokea sehemu iliyoitwa Chame (au Chami) kwenye milima ya usambara, na kaka mkubwa aliyeongozana nao aliitwa Nyari ambaye alimzaa mtoto wakiwa njiani Hedaru akamwita kwa jina la Mchami/Mshami kama kumbukumbu ya asili yao walikotokea. Nyari alifariki njiani wakati Mshami alishakuwa kijana wa kujitegemea, na safari yao ya kuelekea kaskazini kwenye milima inayovutia ilipiga kambi kubwa kwenye miteremko ya mlima Kilimanjaro karibu na kijiji kinaitwa kwa Sadala kando ya mto Kikafu. Eneo hilo leo hii inapita barabara ya Moshi-Arusha.

Kwenye kambi hii waliishi kwa kitambo na hatimaye kwa kufuata mila waliamua kutengana kutokana na asili yao. Lemireny wakati huo akiwa mzee sana aliamua kwenda na watoto wake na wasaidizi wengine kwenye miteremko ya mlima Meru (kwa udogo wake) na kuwaacha Mshami na watoto wake na wengine aliokuwa nao kwenye miteremko ya mlima Kilimanjaro (kwa heshima ya uzao wa kaka yake mkubwa Nyari).

Watoto wa Mshami waliitwa Masawe, Lema, na Nkya (aliyeitwa pia Munissi, kama mrithi wa boma la baba yake, yaani kimachame, nkukeny). Mshami na timu yake walipanda juu kidogo kando ya mto Kikafu na kuweka makazi yao eneo lilioitwa Sienyi. Mshami alikuja kujulikana zaidi kama Mashami (au Machame baadaye). Baadaye eneo zima liliitwa jina hilo kwa kumbukumbu yake kama kiongozi wa kwanza wa jamii iliyoweka makazi yake kwenye eneo hilo la miteremko ya mlima Kilimanjaro.

Kaaya na Mbise nao walikuwa ndugu wawili walioongoza jamii nzima iliyokuja kuitwa wameru baadaye. Kaaya na uzao wake waliendelea kushikilia uongozi wa kisiasa na kuwa wamangi katika jamii hiyo.

Wamachame na Wameru kwa hiyo wana asili moja na waliendelea kutumia jina la Mangi kama kiongozi wao mkuu (au mfalme). Jina hili baadaye, mwanzoni mwa karne ya 20 lilikuja kutumika kama jina la kiongozi wa kichaga(hasa baada ya Mmishionari Bruno Guttman kuacha kutumia jina la sultani na majina mengine kama mkumbe yaliyotumika uchagani na kutumia jina la Mangi ambalo lilitumika kiasili Machame na magharibi ya uchagani).

Mila za wamachame na wameru zimefanana sana na hata lugha. Hata hivyo wamachame walikuja kuathiriwa zaidi na muingiliano na wachaga wengine waliokuja kuhamia katika miteremko hiyo ya mlima Kilimanjaro. Vile vile pamoja na kuendeleza ushirikiano wa muda mrefu, Wameru nao walikuja kuathiriwa sana na jamii za kimasai na kiarusha na hata kuathiri mila zao na desturi. Kwa hiyo Makabila haya mawili pamoja na kufanana sana bado yamekuja kuwa na tofauti za kimila na kidesturi.
