Five men crash-land their airplane on a deserted island in the South Pacific. On their first day they gather as many coconuts as they can find into one big pile. They decide that, since it is getting dark, they will wait until the next day to divide the coconuts. That night each man took a turn watching for rescue searchers while the others slept. The first watcher got bored so he decided to divide the coconuts into five equal piles. When he did this, he found he had one remaining coconut. He gave this coconut to a monkey, took one of the piles, and hid it for himself.
Then he jumbled up the four other piles into one big pile again. To cut a long story short, each of the five men ended up doing exactly the same thing. They each divided the coconuts into five equal piles and had one extra coconut left over, which they gave to the monkey.
They each took one of the five piles and hid those coconuts. They each came back and jumbled up the remaining four piles into one big pile. What is the smallest number of coconuts there could have been in the original pile?

Dear BornVillage;

Let k be any number divisible by 5 so that k>=5.

Then the number of coconuts is given by the expression
(5^5xk)+(5^4)+(5^3)+(5^2)+(5^1)+(5^0).

The least number of coconuts is when k is least (remember k=5, 10, 15, ....), i.e. when k=5 in the above expression. Therefore the number of coconuts (least number) is 16,406.

Note that the rest of the statements in the expression (except the first) are multiplied by 1 each, i.e the remainders of each stage.
Goodluck ila umenikumbusha Form II mwaka 1987!

Jibu ni 3,121 coconut. usiulize nilipataje!

very simple....nadhani hii ni homework...
ntaenda kufanyia home. uliza swali lingine mkuu
la papo kwa papo.

Kosa. 3,121 gawa kwa 5 unapata 624 ambayo ukiigawa kwa 5 tena baki siyo moja ila ni nne!

3,121-1(aliyochukua monkey)= 3,120. 3,120/5=624.
624X4=2,496. 2,496-1(aliyochukua monkey)=2,495/5=499.
499X4=1,996. 1,996-1(aliyochukua monkey)=1,995/5=399.
399X4=1,596. 1,596-1(aliyochukua monkey)=1,595/5=319.
319X4=1,276. 1,276-1(aliyochukua monkey)=1,275/5=255.
255X4=1,020. 1,020/5=204.

Hamjaelewa swali, au labda kuna swali jingine tofauti na lililoko hapa
16,406 gawa kwa 5 unapata 3,281 baki 1
3,281/5=656 baki 1
656/5=131 baki 1
131/5=26 baki 1
26/5=5 baki 1
Mafungu matano kwa migawanyo ya watu watano.
Perhaps we need to rephrase the problem int swahili!

Makanyaga nadhani wewe hujaelewa swali. Katika mchanganuo wako sioni mahali mafungu manne yaliyobaki yakijumlishwa tena pamoja kama kwenye swali linavyosema "Then he jumbled up the four other piles into one big pile again"

Ni kweli! Ningekuwa sahihi kama angekuwa anachukua mafungu manne na kubakiza moja ili aligawanye kwenye mafungu mengine matano. Hapa anachukua moja na kubakiza manne! Kisu uko sahihi sema hujaonyesha njia! Big up
