Under the microscope: The HIV virus

A tot appears to have been cured of HIV after being given an extra-powerful round of treatment at just 30 hours old.

The toddler, now two and a half, was taken off standard medication a year ago, with no signs of infection.

It is only the world's second reported cure and could lead the way in fighting paediatric HIV.

Doctor Deborah Persaud, of John Hopkins University in Baltimore, US, presented the findings. She said: "This is a proof of concept

that HIV can be potentially curable in infants."

Medics do not usually give high-dose treatment right after birth but scientists believe giving a bigger and faster blast wiped out the

virus before it could hide away in the body and resist any future medication.

The girl, of Mississippi, was born to a mother who had just tested positive for HIV, which can lead to Aids.

She was put on a cocktail of three drugs at 30 hours old, even before lab tests came back confirming her infection. In typical

pregnancies the baby would only have been given one drug to reduce her infection risk.

Just 29 days later there were no signs of the virus in her body.

Her doctor, Hannah Gay, at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, said: "At that point, I knew I was dealing with an unusual

case."

The findings were presented at an Aids conference in Atlanta.
