Serginho, the former Milan Brazilian flying full-back, spoke to Gazzetta dello Sport and discussed the Rossoneri season ahead of the derby. This is what he said:

“The team has changed its face with Ibra, of course, but also thanks to his work: he has given a clear game identity and the ability to believe in his own means.”

Is Milan great again now?

“The road is marked, Paolo has done a great job. He has adapted to the philosophy of the ownership: young people to build a winning project. Milan dreams big thanks to him.”

Will tonight’s derby be a Scudetto test?

“Yes. The gap in the standings is minimal and the effects of a derby should not be underestimated. But we will win this one.”

Are Inter more equipped than Milan?

“They have more experience. But the scudetto is won every Sunday , and Milan are the team with the most balance and continuity, and they are hungry for success.”

Thoughts on Theo Hernandez, do you see better players than him in Europe in his role?

“I don’t see anyone better than him. Would he have been on the bench with me? (Laughs) Difficult, they are different eras. Maybe I was more technical, but he has the body: a monster. We would have alternated, with Maldini further back.”

On Ibrahimovic:

“These months are the fruit of a career as a true athlete: he takes care of every detail. I can imagine him in the Champions League: he will do great things even at 40.”

On Mandzukic:

“If he’s an ideal partner to Zlatan? He’s more of an alternative. Ibra’s partner is Leao because he has speed, instinct and the ability to open up spaces.”

On Milan without Brazilian players:

“Milan has very technical players, they are very good in the vision of the game. But the Brazilian technique is another thing: it is absolute unpredictability, like a derby.”

Milan got off to a good start in the derby against Inter as Zlatan Ibrahimovic opened the scoring. However, the Swede was sent off in the second half and the Nerazzurri eventually turned the game around, winning 2-1.

Tatarusanu (7.5 – MOTM): Despite not getting a lot of playing time, the Romanian did the best job he could do, filling in for the suspended Gigio Donnarumma between the sticks. Made several fantastic stops and is inarguably the Rossoneri’s MOTM.

Dalot (6.5): The Man Utd loanee worked very hard in defensive and was only beaten a few times, while recovering on the other occasions. Not spectacular by any means, but encouraging in what was a very tough second half.

Kjaer (N/A): Started the game relatively well, although he was booked early, but then had to leave the pitch with an injury. The new signing Fikayo Tomori came on to replace him after just 20 minutes.

Romagnoli (7): It isn’t usually the case in the derbies, but the captain put in a very good performance at the back. Can’t really fault him for any of the goals and it’s a shame that they didn’t get a better result for their display.
Hernandez (6.5): Although it is to be expected in bigger games, we didn’t see much of his towering runs down the left-hand side and he didn’t have a huge impact on the game. Solid defensively, though, in a tough situation.

Meite (5): Not a good game for the Frenchman even though he, rather luckily, got the assist for Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s opener. Lost the ball several times and almost gifted a goal to the Nerazzurri, before committing the foul that led to Inter’s winner.

Kessie (7): Worked extremely hard for the entire game and played on despite some physical struggles. He was solid in his passing and also covered a lot of areas, crucial especially when Milan went down to ten men.

Saelemaekers (6.5): Tireless as always and showed why Milan need him in both phases of the game. Obviously, he devoted a lot of time to defending in the second half but looked very encouraging in the first half.

Diaz (6): The Spaniard was taken off in the 60th minute due to Ibrahimovic’s red card and that was a shame, as he had a decent start to the game. Is starting to look a lot stronger on the ball and that is indeed positive.

Leao (6): Yet another bright start from the Portuguese but then he faded as the game went on. It’s hard to make an exact judgement on that, though, as he had to defend with the rest of his nine teammates.
Ibrahimovic (5.5): He may have scored the Rossoneri’s only goal with a lovely effort, but he also ruined the game for them with a silly foul. Perhaps you could argue a second yellow was tough, but it was clumsy defending nevertheless.

Substitutes

Tomori (6.5): Good debut for the Chelsea loanee, who showed his pace and strength in many duels. Made several good blocks and interceptions, though he was a bit rash in some situations. Definitely a positive display, it must be said.

Rebic (6): Came on and did his best to help the team, pressing the Nerazzuri defence and trying to make something out of very little. You can’t really fault him, he did what was possible under the circumstances.

Castillejo (N/A): Was subbed on in the 85th minute and we didn’t see enough to give him a rating.

Krunic (N/A): Was subbed on in the 85th minute and we didn’t see enough to give him a rating.

Why Ibrahimovic used 'voodoo' on Lukaku

Zlatan Ibrahimovic reportedly denied he racially abused Romelu Lukaku, as his ‘voodoo’ comment was referencing a specific incident from his Everton days.
The former Manchester United teammates clashed bitterly during this evening’s Coppa Italia quarter-final, which saw Inter beat Milan 2-1.
The exact phrases used aren’t all clear, but Ibrahimovic did seem to say: “Go do your voodoo s***, you little donkey.”

This has been read as a racist phrase, but Sky Sport Italia say representatives from Milan assure Ibrahimovic denied any racist insult.
It’s believed Ibrahimovic was referencing a quote from Everton major shareholder Farhad Moshiri, who said in January 2018 that Lukaku had turned down a new contract because of a ’voodoo message.’
“We offered him a better deal than Chelsea and his agent came to Finch Farm to sign the contract," said Moshiri three years ago.
“Robert [Elstone, Everton’s chief executive] was there, everything was in place, there were a few reporters outside, then in the meeting Rom called his mother.
“He said he was on a pilgrimage in Africa or somewhere and he had a voodoo and he got the message that he needs to go to Chelsea.”
Lukaku had denied this story, and indeed ended up joining Manchester United rather than Chelsea.

The Belgium international threatened to sue Moshiri for the claim.
“Romelu’s decision had nothing to do with voodoo. He distances himself from these beliefs and this statement and will now see what judicial steps can be taken in relation to them,” a representative told BBC Sport.
“Romelu is very Catholic and voodoo is not part of his life or his beliefs. He simply had no faith in Everton and no confidence in Mr Moshiri’s project. That is why he did not want to sign on any condition. He wanted to make the next step in his career and wanted the security to be able to leave.”
The story did hit the headlines, though, and evidently Ibrahimovic had it stored away for later use as an insult he knew would infuriate the striker.

If You Have Had More Managers Than
Trophies The question is, can we still call this Chelsea a football club or coaches club? 😁😁😁😂😂😂

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport (via Eurosport), Ibrahimovic could be heard saying: “Go and do your crap rites elsewhere, little donkey.”

Tatarusanu to Rai Sport: "Great game, it wasn't easy to play like this after Saturday's defeat. Ibra-Lukaku? Nothing serious"

Coach Stefano Pioli granted an interview after the derby loss in the Coppa Italia 2-1. He had this to say to the microphones of Milan TV:

“We made a good performance. I got the answers I wanted even though we can’t be satisfied with the result. We leave this game with convictions to do well in the future. We have the qualities to do well.”

“The team played the game with the intensity that was lacking with Atalanta. The game then became complicated with incidents such as the expulsion of Zlatan but the team did not give up and continued to fight.”

“We have a strong push. We lose the Coppa Italia which was an important goal but we are focused on the other competitions which are even more important. We have to continue with intensity and play as we know. There are 4 months left in the season and we have to continue working as we are. doing knowing that the second round will be difficult.”

AC Milan boss Stefano Pioli believes that going down to 10 men against a ‘very strong team’ was ultimately too much for his side to deal with.
It was a night that was certainly not lacking any drama as Inter ended up prevailing 2-1 in injury time with a Christian Eriksen free-kick.

Milan took the lead in the first half through Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s strike off the far post, though the Swede saw red early in the second half for a second booking.
His first yellow card had come on the stroke of half-time as he got into a heated exchange with Romelu Lukaku who was very lucky to stay on the pitch after his carry-on, but stay on he did and he converted the penalty to make it 1-1.
That penalty had been a very debatable one too even after a VAR review, as was the free-kick incident that ended with Eriksen converting.
Pioli was interviewed by Rai Sport after the game, with his comments transcribed by MilanNews and translated below.
On the game: “We are sorry to have gone out, we were keen on the competition. The game told us that we can keep up with a very strong team, having ten men has complicated the situation.”
On the Ibra-Lukaku incident: “It influenced [the game], the first warning caused the sending off. They are adults and vaccinated, I don’t know what they said, it can happen, you have to get over it and think about the next one.”
On the red card: “With ten it became even more difficult, we became a little naive about the penalty foul. It’s a good performance, I come out of this defeat very confident about our future.”
On what made the difference: “The difference was only the fact that there were ten of us left, in eleven against eleven the game was open to any result and we were ahead.”
On Ibra’s foul: “He got a bit caught up in the desire to help the team, he could slow down the game a bit but he can stay on.”

AC Milan’s January business might not be done as the management are seeking a deputy to Theo Hernandez, a report claims.

Today’s edition of Tuttosport (via MilanNews) confirms that Milan want to sign a full-back with two names left after a potential deal for Barcelona’s Junior Firpo collapsed.

The names in question are Matias Viña of Palmeiras and Nuno Mendes of Sporting CP, but both are not simple operations. The former – a 23-year-old Uruguay international – was a target in the January window last year. Milan had an agreement with the player but not with his then-club Nacional of Montevideo, so he moved to Palmeiras who now do not want to sell him.

Meanwhile, Nuno Mendes is only 18 years old but is already a starter with Rafael Leao’s former club Sporting, so signing him is complicated. In the Portuguese full-back’s contract there is a release clause worth €70million. Obviously that is not the real price of the player, but his value is still high and it is unlikely his

The paper also mentioned Jordan Amavi of Marseille and Iago of Augsburg as alternative targets, while other names may emerge as Frederic Massara and Paolo Maldini do not lack imagination.

Barcelona are on the verge of total bankruptcy. The club are €1,173M in debt in total; a sum of €730M of the debt is owed short term and €266M is owed to banks by June 30th which must be paid, €90M of which is owed directly to Goldman Sachs. [el mundo via @footballespana_]

According to Estadio Deportivo, Tottenham coach Jose Mourinho is seriously interested in Florian Thauvin. The Portuguese is not at all pleased with the performances of Gareth Bale and wants a new winger in the summer. Being a free agent the Marseille winger is a great opportunity

Estadio Deportivo writes that Mourinho’s interference could ruin AC Milan’s transfer plans. The Rossoneri are not very satisfied with Samuel Castillejo and want to bring a new right winger in the summer. After his long injury last season, Thauvin is now fully fit and has played a key role for Marseille so far. In 27 appearances, the World Cup winner has scored 6 goals and assisted 9.

The elimination in the Italian Cup changes the calendar of the Rossoneri, who will not play the match against the Calabrians on Friday night.
The elimination of Milan in the Coppa Italia is also reflected in the Serie A calendar. In fact, the date of the match against Crotone has changed , which was initially scheduled for 5 February at 8.45 pm.
Given that the Rossoneri will not be involved in the semifinals, which will be played between 3 and 10 February, the match against Crotone has been moved to Sunday 7 February, with kick-off at 15.00.
